Political conversions poll

Dunno about that; my ultra-liberal parents pretty much hit the roof when I came home after my first year of college and told them I was going to socialist summer school. But then, I had to ride halfway across the country with a couple of strange men to get there, so their reaction was probably justified …

Several people have mentioned that they “registered independent.” Living here in the Land of Lincoln, we don’t have that option. If you vote in the primary here, you must pick a party. So I was just wondering if you guys could explain how registering as an independent works in other states.

Thanks!

My folks were Republicans but tended to vote more liberal on the president.

I’m a Democrat – I have to declare a party in Florida and being Independent means I can’t vote in any primaries – I usually vote Democrat localy and third party nationaly.
I only once voted straight party line and that was 92. That was more a vote against George Bush than in favor of Bill Clinton. In 96 I voted for Ralph Nader. In 00 I will most likely be voting against George W Bush instead of voting for Al Gore. UGH! What a poor set of choices! I would much rather have the Republicans split up so all the really outrageous Right Wing nutballs can have their own party and have the Democrats split so all the really wimpy namby-pamby guys can have their own party — and out of the four new parties, I’d find a fifth one I could follow.

The two middle parties would eventually unite and take over.

I’m with ya. Every time I hear one of those right-wing guys “threaten” to leave the GOP and start his own new party, I cheer in the hopes he’d actually do it. Alas, they’re empty threats.

Looks like I wasn’t kidding when I said earlier that I’ll probably register Democrat this time. I recently found out that an acquaintance (and friend of many of my friends) is running for State’s Atty. in this county. I went to my first political fundraiser ever last night – for him.

I’ve just come from Great Debates, and I have to say some of the arguments are convincing. But I still would go for Mary Ann over Ginger. You can’t convert me.
