Poll: Does Romney's Mormonism bother you?

Got me there…I posted in a fit of pique, and did so unwisely. I’m just tired of religion having as much influence as it does, and I particularly don’t like it when candidates demagogue it. But I apologize for being an idiot, and a conflicted one at that.

Where did you get the idea that Romney has a “socialist bent”?

What exactly does the term “socialist” mean to you?

Really surprised at the number of “I would never vote for a devout Mormon” votes.

I wouldn’t vote for a devout anything, but “Mormon” was the only choice I was given.

I don’t mind what religion a candidate is, as long as it is not important to his/her opinions, worldview, perception of their role in society, perception of the role of the President, or way of making decisions. It seems to me this excludes the devout.

This video posted in small part because it’s tangentially relevant but mostly because I have lust in my heart for the singer.

I voted “I wouldn’t vote for a devout Mormon” but I suspect I would hesitate to vote for a really devout anything and yes, I am an atheist.

The thing is, I think a lot of people who go into politics at any level seem to think the safest thing to do is to claim to be quite religious, when they may not actually attend church or believe the tenets of their faith much at all. We can all think of politicians who are great at mouthing pieties but who seem to be fairly clueless about what living a virtuous life actually involves.

Same. From my perspective there’s little difference between a devout Mormon and a devout Catholic or Scientologist.

It bothers me a great deal that Romney, a lifelong liberal, is now running as a faux conservative and may win.

The Mormon thing doesn’t bother me at all.

That comment is no different than the accusation that Kennedy would have let the Pope run the United States government once he was elected. The Pope did not run the US government and, in case you haven’t noticed, the Mormon church did not run the Massachusetts state government when Romney was Governor.

Where do you get the idea that Romney wishes to impose his religion on the nation?

Well, it would be if that were the case.

You do remember that he was Governor of an entire state, don’t you? Was it illegal there to have more than two earrings in one ear? Was it illegal to drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? Was it illegal to smoke tobacco? It’s not even illegal to drink coffee, tea, or booze in Utah.

Oh, and you can forget all about gaining any ground on GLBT rights. Nevermind abortion, we women can forget all about trying to obtain birth control.

Speaking of birth control, I just checked the LDS church’s website and this is what they have to say about that:

Well, since the stated stance is different than what you fear it is, I’ll just go with, “The LDS church is not making decisions about family planning for me.”

It seems to me the OP left out one option in the responses: “No matter what the candidate’s faith is, or even if the candidate has no religion, I would only vote for the candidate after I’m satisfied with their answers to some questions I think are important.”
