How bizarre, I was just thinking about this today.
I share my twin-sized loft bed with about 7-8 extremely fluffy, squishy pillows as well as giant stuffed Meowth and plenty of reading material stashed about.
My bed is more than likely a shoe-in for the “Most Pillows per Square Foot” award.
Two pillows. I use them both to prop my head when reading in bed. When sleeping I use one to cover my face so that the sun doesn’t wake me up in the morning.
I have one buckwheat hull pillow to rest my head on; one body pillow if I need it, but mostly I just put it behind my TV pillow for extra support.
3 for me that I use, but only 1 to sleep with.
4 on top of my feet (or else my feet get cold).
And then a husband pillow used for reading in bed. (but there really isn’t enough room for it when I’m asleep)
One standard-size, medium-height, down-filled pillow, which is lovingly abused every night and has been known to look like a sphere in the morning. A few years ago I had to get a new pillow because I was fluffing the old one while changing the sheets and it exploded
I’ve heard lots of good things about those buckwheat pillows, but have never tried one - not sure if they are available in the UK or not. I love pillows though. All sorts. If it were up to me there would be several huge fluffy ones on the bed, and a few smaller ones for cuddlin’ and getting comfy. However, this is not the case…
There are ususally 3 pillows on my side of the bed - one medium and 2 small squidgey ones. When going to bed, the middle thin squished one gets put on the nightstand next to the bed so my hand doesn’t whack it (bit of a silly moo me).
I use anywhere from 3 to 5 pillows depending on how many the kids have pilfered. My bedroom is closest to the living room…
I prefer expensive feather/down ones. I tried buckwheat at a friend’s house and didn’t like it a whole lot better than my current pillows–but I wouldn’t turn down a gift.
Three pillows is a minimum–one under head, one to squeeze and one between my knees to improve back position. The others are for security, I just like to be surrounded. If there are less then three pillows in my room at bedtime, “comments are made.”
A mushy one to put over my head when needed to block out noise or light.
A body pillow down the left side of the bed to support my right knee when I’m lying on that side. Since that knee was injured years ago, the scar area along the inside is very sensitive, and does not like touching the hard surface of the mattress or the bony part of the other knee. Also, as I get older, I think the body pillow is good for my back too.
I use three piled in a wedge - I need to sleep with head and shoulders elevated. I may turn on one side or another for short periods, but mostly I’m a back sleeper.
I’ve been thinking about buying a foam wedge then just have one small mushy pillow on that. But I’m cheap, so I make do with what I have.

Four. One which acts like a base wedged into the corner for reading and tv watching. It’s one of those weird “looks like the back and arms of a barca-lounger” thingies. Then I have one medium and one soft queen-sized pillows for actual sleep, the soft one goes on top of the medium. Then I have a big square pillow for cuddling, laying on, or putting between the knees depending of position.
I keep a selection of extra firm, firm, medium, down, and wheat. They rotate in their job descriptions, because sometimes I am in the mood for a certain kind of pillow. Sometimes I wake up in the night and need a switch.
I have to get another one, because we’ve discovered that the cat enjoys sleeping under one of the down pillows, and he’s not pleased if someone yanks it off of him while he’s resting.
Mr. Del gets whatever pillow I’m not using at the moment. Thank heavens he’s a sound sleeper, I’ve had to switch pillows on him in the middle of the night.
