Poll: how many pushups?

Male, aged 18(nearly 19). On a good day I can do about 30, maybe a little more. Most of the time I can’t do much more than 20. I don’t have much upper body strength unfortunately.

Female, 30 years old, 6 pushups.

Which surprised me because I haven’t done any kind of arm exercises in a very long time (except for manual labor at work–I’m a pastry chef and can lift and carry 50# bags of flour around, so I’m not a total cream puff).

And, just like Thinksnow, arms have never been my strongest point, anyways. My legs, though…

Male-ish, 20-ish, and weak as can be. I don’t think I can even do one pushup… although, I tend to underestimate my physical prowess, and I’m sore as hell right now so I’m not going to try.

Age: 19
Female
0 pushups (no, I didn’t accidentally delete one of the digits)

I have shocking upper body strength. Just then I tried to do a pushup on my bed and fell flat on my face. It was really embarrassing.

48 y/o physical wreck…

Even in my youth, I couldn’t do a straight-legged pushup. I managed to eke out the minimum number of bent-knee types for PT tests while I was on active duty. I’ve always had lousy upper body strength, and little to no desire to do anything about it.

Well, I could brag and say 151, but it’s been almost two years since I set that PR (during a commercial break, and I could barely lift a plastic cup for 15 minutes after).

::goes off to do pushups::

  1. Got bored.

[sub]Do I really need to mention that I’m 20? I think everyone who works for the Chicago Reader knows that by now…[/sub]

Oh. Lest someone think that I just decided, out of the blue, to do a hundredn and fifty one pushups during a commercial break … I started “training” around February of that year. Training consisted of doing pushups until I couldn’t. then resting for a few minutes, then doing more. Getting to 75 was a joke (hey, I don’t weigh very much, and my arms are … rather strong). Getting to 100 was … decently easy. 125 was pushing it, and I haven’t gotten closer than 130 (if that) since.

Of course, I also don’t care enough anymore to do 500 pushups a day. And I have better things to do with my time than take 30 minutes and do 500 pushups:)

And on a side note … gobear, I wonder if, next dopefest we’re both at, you’d be willing to try a kind of pushup I haven’t been able to do yet (lack of someone else to try it with) … it’s basically a clap pushup?with the caveat that you’re clapping someone else’s hand. You face the other person, go down, then up and then clap your right hand with the other person’s right. Except I’m thinking we could do both hands. Fair warning: it’s really difficult. Think about pushing hard enough on your way up that you could clap twice.

Yeah. There’s a reason I haven’t found anyone yet who was a viable candidate for trying it out. You don’t just hafta be strong, you have to be STRONG.

Male, age 35

Push ups: 35 honest ones in a row

Female, 25, can do between 10 and 15 (and that’s on a good day  )

When I worked out I could probably manage around 50 but it’s been a good 3 years since I have. Now I spend my days chasing children around (not as a hobby you understand, they are mine!) and never seem to have any time to do anything else.

Female, 28. 0 push ups. So don’t feel bad, Kayeby. The sad thing is, I lift weights 3 days a week. I can do 40 lb butterfly presses easily, but I simply cannot do a single push up.

Male, 32 in June.

Nose 3 in. from floor, 52 in 1 minute last September.

Now? Probably over 40, but I’d be hurting.

I do Thai kickboxing, but haven’t really been going regularly for the past 6 months. In class the first half hour is jogging around the gym, stop drop and do 20 sit ups, 20 pushups, jog, drop, jog, drop, etc. Then we punch the bags and spar, with the occasional drop. By the end of class on a tough night we’ll do over 300 pushups.

I’m just starting up again regularly. Oh boy, am I out of shape. I gained 5-6 kilos, don’t fit into any of my jeans, it sucks. I’m starting a moderation diet and exercise program now, so we’ll see how it goes. I used to slam the diet and exercise, lose 5k, then get sick or go on a business trip and stop everything, gain it all back, etc. So now I’m going to try and moderate things and pick up some healthier habits. Wish me luck!

Male
Age 32
Pushups: Between 70 and 80.

I work out every day though. The above is an estimate, because I did arms and shoulders yesterday, and you’re lucky I’m even typing…

Age: 48

Gender: male

Push-ups: 45 to 50 depending on how hard I want to push it.

Male, 19

I could get 100 three years ago when I was playing hockey.

Sex: Male
Age: 22
Height: 5’ 10"
Weight: 180lbs

I can do 48 pushups noise to ground. If I’m doing knuckle pushups I can manage 25 before my wrists give out. I’m working on that though. I’m getting into serious rock climbing and grip strengh (same muscles you use for fisted/knuckle pushups) is essential to lead climbing.

I just did 27. Stopped since I’m (currently) not in peak shape and I don’t want to ache tomorrow. Just wanted to do 1 more than a kid a third my age (Chekmate). Male.

Wait until my foot heals so I can get back into shape, then ask again!

When I was pledging a frat I had lots of practice. Once did 87 in a little over a minute. Now? Nowhere near that… probably 30 or 40 tops.

I love push-ups! I could eat those things all day long. Nice and orangey. Oh wait, you are talking about something else.
Never mind.

Male, 38, 250lbm, 6ft even.

45 good ones. Another ten if you allow for a little sloppyness.

Three years ago, I could do 67 good (in two minutes)+ 10 sloppy ones. 67 in two minutes was what I needed to score an ‘outstanding’ on the pushup portion of the Navy Physical Readiness Test. Of course, I was 40 lbm lighter then, too.

Male 24.
I am doing kung-fu and we are SUPPOSED to be getting to the stage where physical discomfort means nothing anymore and as long as there is air in our lungs and oxygen in our blood we should be able to keep doing them… Hasnt quite happened yet  but I remain hopeful if only because
1)I have spoken to the senior students and the all swear it is true and
2)My Psychology lecturers agree that fatigue is socially learned (not like exhaustion which is caused by not having enough sugar and/or oxygen to supply your muscles).

So having said that so far my class can do 80 ‘good ones’ and innumerable ‘ok ones’. But we generally do three or four SETS per class.

Another interesting thing is that there is a girl in our class who is by far the smallest person there. She is 24 like me (btw) and when it comes to all the exercises she puts all us butch guys to shame. She can do more than any of us because she is also the most DRIVEN person in the class. See someone once told her that girls cant do pushups and she has been proving them wrong for two years running now. Go figure.

Cheers
