Well I have heard it both ways, but I have usually heard it as “Ring in the New Year.”

We gather to “ring” it in, as in to celebrate it.

*Ring in * - as with church bells announcing the start of the new year from midnight. That’s what we did last night just after we’d sung a Te Deum.

Just to add to my earlier post: I think you’ll find it’s mainly mentioned in Scots tradition to bring in the New Year. Alternatively, there’s “seeing in” the New Year, as well.

I used to ring church bells, as did my mother. For me, it’s “Ring in the New Year.”
