Poll: What configuration of iPad should I buy?

Just as an aside: I’m 52 years old and I’ve been a hardcore computer freak since about 1985. I make my living on the internet and have since 1997.All to say, I’m no Luddite by any stretch.

And STILL: the very fact that we’re having this conversation blows my mind sometimes. (i.e., how many movies and books I can carry in digital form to watch wherever I want to)

I did some checking, and it is evidently all because the pictures that were dug up show a Wednesday the 9th date on the iCal icon. The original had a Wednesday the 27th icon and was announced on Wednesday the 27th, so that’s why.

The other information i’ve read says that the announcement will likely be two months ahead of the actual availability, and that Apple will be the only seller until late summer.

Taken together, I’m going for it now. I’m sure it’s a lovely device as is, and if I find I just have to have an iPad2 for some reason I will get one later.

Especially since I just received the money and gave up the lap; hanging on to the cash for months and going without my lap, well, I’m just not that good at delayed gratification and self-control. Hence my ass.

Another thing to keep in mind: only the 3G version has GPS.

No doubt. I’m insanely jealous of my wife’s iPad…it IS the future.

I mentioned in the past that I bought Dragons Lair for my iPhone…for a Buck. It’s a 200 Mb file. That’s SIX percent of the device’s storage.

Dragon’s Lair was the first Laser Disk video game…it used a Laserdisk to display an animated cartoon you could control…it was the only way to fit all of the High Resolution content into a full-sized arcade cabinet. Game play used to be $0.50 a pop.

ON MY PHONE!

FOR A BUCK!

The iOS 4.3 Hotspot thing;

Todderbob is not technically correct. Jailbreaking DOES void your warranty, but if you restore to factory settings and have the same issue, then it is covered within the warranty. This is a fine distinction because there are a very few, very rare, hardware problems that can be caused by jailbreaking, and if you CANNOT restore to factory settings, it will NOT be covered under warranty.

Oh, and on the “proliferation of free wifi”…

I wish I’d gotten the bigger storage. I didn’t reason it out that my photo library at its higher resolution would take up a hell of a lot more space than on my iPhone. Now it’s practically full!

If you have a phone that you can tether (as mentioned above) then 3G is unimportant. Hence, I went with the WIFI only version. The downside is no GPS reception or assisted GPS from the cell network.

There isn’t a Genius or Mobile Support who cares.

If the device is bricked, they try a quick restore and if that doesn’t work swap it out (if you’re under AppleCare). If the device boots, and is jailbroken, they do what i mentioned before. If the device can’t be restored and is jail broken, it’s put into DFU restore mode and restored, and you’re sent on your merry way.

I would not necessarily wait for the iPad2 - but at this point, I’d wait for the announcement. There may be a surprise that makes it more attractive. 3G that works with both ATT and Verizon perhaps.

32GB is plenty for a few movies and lots of books (at least from my wife’s experience) - books and apps almost don’t matter. A few thousand of them would probably only take up a few GB. Music, depends on whether you want to carry it all with you

Don’t forget that the iPad needs a ‘home’ iTunes on a PC/Mac/Notebook.

Note to Unintentionally Blank - I doubt that your 200MB game is 6% of your iPhone storage, unless you have a very small iPhone…

That’s what I get for carrying all those zeros in my head.

32Gb is 32,000,000,000 bytes (ignoring the whole 2^whatever) 200 Mb is 200,000,000…isn’t it 6.25%?

200 mb is 1/5th of a GB, which would make that app 0.625%.

[obnoxious staples guy]I KNOW!!! [/obnoxious staples guy]

iPads aren’t tetherable, and it seems that’s very much intentional. It can only be done with mobile hotspots.

This was one of the two major things that pushed me to make the 3g purchase. (Other being the non-tetherable issue) Which I dida few hours ago. 16gig & 3g, leather case, 6 months of warranty remaining, total cost out the door: $510.

One other bonus: my research makes it clear that 3g’s greater value when new holds up when used. So if/when the day comes to resell, better I have a 3g.

Which makes my point even better! :smack:

If pressed, I’d favor the 3g over the additional memory, but I would probably go with the cheapest iPad if I were to buy another one. I say this as a former owner of a 32GB 3G model. Having the compass was nice, but I never used the 3G and never came close to filling the thing up.

You misunderstood me. If you have a telephone that is tetherable, and is presumably with you at all times, then you don’t require a 3G iPad. It will get its WIFI connection from your tethered telephone. That is, assuming your telephone is capable of tethering over WIFI. My non-3G iPad has no issues at all using my iPhone’s WIFI tethering.

Did you jailbreak or are you using at&t’s tethering feature? (or do you live where the feature is reasonably priced?)

It’s jailbroken. Although… I’ve not use MyWI with AT&T yet, because the iPad hasn’t left the house since arriving there. Until recently, I used it all the time with Telcel in Mexico (where it was specifically allowed).

Edit: Actually, that’s not true. I used MyWI from the iPhone on AT&T to provide service for the iPad on my whole drive from Texas to Michigan.

I have it.

I love it.

I want to have sex with it.

It is a thing of incredible beauty.

Fanboi. :dubious:
