poll - would you pay a premium for a real Coke?

Google “soda” and you’ll see that there are a number of companies that sell “real sugar” colas by mail-order. Including Mexican Coke. I am lucky in that there are several grocery stores in my area that stock all of these, so Real Coke isn’t a problem.

Okay…I don’t understand why a Mexican grocer in the U.S. wouldn’t just order from a local distributor. Do they generally prefer the real sugar taste to the American crappy version or are they just in the habit of ordering all their stuff from Mexico? Like I said…I don’t drink much pop, so I have no idea about this change in flavor.

Mountain Dew is my drug of choice, I wonder what it would taste like if made with real sugar. I’d pay more to find out.

I can’t speak for Mexican grocers, but the store “USA & Co.” in Hong Kong imported fucking water from the US. And our local Chinese supermarket imports Kikkoman shoyu (which is Japanese to start with) from Hong Kong, even though there are distributors in the UK for the same product.

Having said that, I do think the taste of sugar Coke is dramatically better, and it’s less bad for you, so who knows?

That was a conclusive post.

Mexican grocery stores around here sell both kinds, US and Mexican Coca-Cola. The Mexican kind has cane sugar. It costs more, but a lot of folks buy it despite the price.

Coke is still sold in glass bottles in Nepal. I didn’t see any in Thailand, but I didn’t see any plastic bottles either, just cans.

Canadian Mountain Dew is made with sugar, but does not have caffeine do to an archaic law stating that only brown soft drinks can have ceffeine in them. I had some of that and it was unmemorable. I’d imagine the Dew in India uses sugar, and that stuff is a sad imitation of the real Dew- it lacks the “sparkle” that US Dew has and has a wierd cloying off-note. I became a Coke drinker while I was there. Ethics aside (Coke has a pretty bad name there) it’s a godsend when you are a little homesick to know that whatever part of the world you find yourself, a little bottle of American impirialism can be found.

Coke in bottles can be found in Mexico, or easily in any decent taqueria or Mexican grocery store. From my experience, Mexican-American bottled Coke consumers do it out of the same nostalgia that drives us to have this discussion.

It can also be found in India and Nepal, where a small bottle will cost you ten-thirty cents. When drinking bottled coke in the third world, please remember that you are expected to consume your drink on the premisis and return the bottle, which the owner has paid a hefty deposit on. These bottles are returned, sterilized and refilled, (which used to be the standard practice for America, as well) to save on resources. It can be kind of fun to look at the evolution of logos on the different bottles, which may be up to ten years old.

If you want to stock up on Coke with sugar, just wait for April, when Passover gets closer. The 2-liter Coke bottles with YELLOW caps (as opposed to the more common red or black) are made with sugar, and it does taste so much better.

When I was in New Orleans last, we could get Barq’s root beer in little 8- or 10-ounce glass bottles, that I think was made locally and contained sugar instead of corn syrup. It tasted quite different – much better, in fact – than usual Barq’s.

Yup. I buy Mexican Coke at the local fruterías from time to time. They come in glass bottles and cost $1 or so. I’m not a big soda drinker at all, so I don’t mind paying a little extra for a treat now and then.

Nope.

Sugar Coke and Dr Pepper are generally available in my area. I bought a case of the cokes for a family member for Christmas and gave him some Dr Peppers last summer. Personally, I don’t care for the sugary ones too much anymore. I bet some of you forgot how they got kind of metallic tasting after the were soaked in big tubs of ice water for too long.

Not me. I buy “Sam’s Choice” , “Crap StoreBrand” or “Mr. Shit Cola” generic soda. Sixty-freakin’-nine CENTS for 2 liters.

Its not that important.

Thinking about, Levi’s jeans are about the only thing I am “brand loyal” for on a regular basis. Even those I get at the thrift store. $6/pair is better than $30+/pair any day.

I suck. :frowning: But I drive a DAMN NICE CAR!

This Canadian immigrant also prefers “Canadian” coke to American. It’s still made with sugar in Canada, too. Every trip home, we bring Coke back with us. Drinking American coke to me is like drinking a melted coke slurpee.

Nah, I only drink sodas when I needs something to mix with cheap bourbon or rum.

Corn syrup. Huh.

So THAT’s why American Coke tastes so weird.

Incidentally, they sell it in bottles around here, too. Restaurants seem to like them - nine times out of ten, that’s what you’ll get if you order a Coke in a moderately classy or better place. I don’t know anyone who buys them for home use, though.

You can get the 6.5 ounce cokes in disposable glass bottles just about anywhere.

You know, I had no idea that you could still by sugar-filled Coke in glass bottles anywhere. I thought it was just a memory of my childhood.

But now, I will be searching for coke in the kosher section. If I can’t find it there, I’m ordering some off the net.

This is a happy day. Real Coke with real sugar! Who’da thunk it?

OK, question: how about fountain Coke? Everybody knows that fountain Coke tastes better than bottled Coke (or at least movie theater fountain Coke does…I dunno.) Is the syrup made from sugar, or corn syrup?

No, I wouldn’t pay a premium for real Coke. I dislike all soft drinks, they have caffeine and sugars in them that I can see no reason to consume. Cane sugar is bad too, and I can see little to no reason to want that. I try to diligently stay away from all refined sugar.

However as far as coke in glass bottles, the Kroger’s around here has stocked those for a very long time.

Funny you should mention it, I just did.
