Ponyo... anybody seen it yet?

Ponyo played here months ago. In the original Japanese with both English and Thai subtitles. Very worth your while. We really liked it.

It’s ポニョ in Japanese (which would be romanized as Ponyo, and would indeed be a long o in English; note also that it’s po nyo, not po n yo).

Nitpick: It’s *rōmaji *(ローマ字), not romanji.

Was this movie released into theaters in English? I’m wondering when the English speaking DVD comes out.

I always prefer subtitles, except for animated movies, where I feel dubbing works fine.

The only time I ever remember seeing Miyazaki subtitled was on DVD. Every theatrical issue I’ve seen has been dubbed.

Yes, it was released dubbed in the U.S.

Depends on who’s doing the dubbing. IME, **especially **with animated films or series, it’s very rare that you get an English VA cast that’s remotely as good as the Japanese cast. Miyazaki’s films are a rare exception. (Not to mention translation issues; my Japanese is good enough that I personally would always prefer Japanese audio + subtitles, so I can catch extra nuances that the translation misses, glosses over, or sometimes gets just plain wrong.)

Yes, I saw it in a theater in the US in English. It was released by Disney with the dubbing done under the supervision of John Lasseter. It was well done. But I also liked watching the original with the subs, if for no other reason than to compare the two.

I can’t find any indication of a release date for the English language version on DVD but I’m sure it’ll be along eventually.

You are absolutely right. I plead sleepiness do to the caffeine in me expiring all at once.

Of course, ALL animated films are dubbed. Even the ones from Hollywood. What, you think those cartoon characters are really speaking?

I once attended a live filming of an animated piece, but everything after the first ninety seconds was blank, after the animators’ fingers spontaneously burst into flames.
