Poor spelling in posts

Who else has noted the poor spelling in posts lately? Last night, when I got onto the message board, it seemed like every post had a spelling error. I hope this isn’t a new trend.

Does this make anyone else tense up and grind their teeth? Has anyone else noticed this anomaly?

I, perhaps, could have made this a Pit rant…but i am afraid, very afraid.

I am NOT trashing accidental spelling mishaps, but those messages that actually have several.

Czarcasm or TVeblen

Would you please move this to the pit. I haven’t gotten much of a response here in IMHO. I feel that I must make it a rant.

Thanks.

Your effort is much appreciated.

And don’t forget punctuation. Good thing this isn’t in the pit, or I’d get really offensive about ill-educated posters who write “My hamster ate it’s babies”

It’s “its” not “it’s” OK???

Thanks Hemlock, you get a ribbon for posting and aiding in the elimination of ignorance!

I don’t care if people spell things wrong from time to time. If they get the point across no big deal.

I am a pretty bad speller. I always forget to hit “preview”.

So shoot me.

IDGAS (I don’t give a shit).

These Web forums are international. You cannot expect everybody has a good a handle on English as native speakers, particularly for whom English is the third or forth language.

Yep it drives me completely nuts too.

But then, I’m the first to admit that I’m a bit anal about the whole thing.

Generally, it only bothers me when it’s a mistake I’ve made and missed on preview. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s not worth the sweat.

In a professional document, it makes me crazy - errors on signs or in newspapers drive my BP up 20-30 points. Poor grammar makes me cringe.

When you come right down to it, this is a casual forum. No sense in letting stuff like this get to you.

I don’t pay attention to it. But then again, I stop paying attention to a post that has too many errors in it. What that tells me is if the poster doesn’t care enough to be careful in his own post, then he has that same level of care in what I post in return. In other words, posting a reply isn’t worth it.

Watt jew tocking bout? Eye right reel grate.

Mee to.
I spel gud.

I find that my spelling is quite awful. But, I never remember to hit the preview button. Just this morning I typed that a death scene in Saving Private Ryan was the “realist” scene in any movie I know. After looking back on my post I was horrified that I typed that for all the world to see. It stands as a lasting example of my editing skills.

guilty as charged! i am a slave to the spell-check, and if there is one on these boards, i don’t know how to use it! i tried typing a post in microsoft word, then moving to the boards, but it came out

          like this with the

words all screwy and out of place
so i didn’t try to do that

again!
sorry, but i think faster than i type so if i start to go back and fix all the little stuff, i miss the train of thought as it pulls out of the station of reason. preview? takes too damn long as it is, now! i ain’t got no time to preview!

Worlds Best Speler!

AAARRRGGGHHHH…I did this just yesterday. It’s also my pet peeve, and I was completely horrified at my finger slippage. Sometimes things happen when typing quickly. I long for the giant Undo button in the sky…

A real pet peeve of mine! Along with inferior syntax.

snicker

Granted that this IS a casual forum, and as long as you can get your point across, all is well…I mean, come on. How hard should it be to spell correctly?

preview, not perview or preveiw…
punctuation, not punctautoin…
forum, not froum…
I know that errors happen from time to time, and I’m being anal also, but it shouldn’t be that hard!!!

There was a t-shirt years ago while in college that went:

Fours years ago I cudn’t even spel enjinere
And now I ARE one.

I hate when I make typos. It usually happens because of one, or more of the following reasons:

[ul]
[li]I am a lousy typist. (but I am a very good speller.)[/li][li]I get in a hurry.[/li][li]I don’t proofread and preview before clicking “submit.”[/li][/ul]

A good way to battle this is to draft your message in Word or notepad, then copy and paste it into the submit form. Keep the thread open, behind Word or notepad so you can refer for quotes and stay focused. I used to do this a lot, but fell out of the habit. I need to start drafting again. I find that notepad is ideal when using vB codes.

Another good thing about this method is, if you get disconnected, or the MB is severely lagged, you are less likely to lose all that you have written.

You know, you gotta be kidding me.
Most of you just admitted to making the same mistakes that you are ranting about.
And as urban Ranger pointed out, perhaps not everyone here has as good a handle on the English Language as some of you linguists here. We all make spelling mistakes, perhaps some more than others, why don’t we all just chill out a little and have some understanding. If someone is in a hurry and wants to get a point across there should be no reason to ignore or condemn them because of poor spelling.

There’s a difference between typos, or forgetting (or neglecting) to preview, and just plain poor spelling. Everyone has done the former two, but the latter is something else again.

I tend to agree with Munch. If a post has too many misspellings, which, to me, bespeaks either a lack of education or sloppiness regarding spelling rules, I tend to pay less attention to that post.

And I know that poor spelling may not always be the result of a lack of education or of sloppiness, but when a person’s written words are all you have to go on, such judgments are inevitable.

Typos I can forgive. Disregard for or ignorance of proper spelling is another matter.

So the fight against ignorance leads to ingoring the ignorant spellers? Smart, that…

I don’t bother to preview, and I don’t always catch typos, and if there’s the odd word I can’t spell, then who cares? If I want to make my comment, or ask my question, then why would a lack of spelling ability prevent me from that, and why should people feel that what I have to say is less important?

I understand pet peeves. I have my pet peeves about spelling too. But I have never found the spelling on these boards by ANY poster to be so distracting as to skip their post, and ignore the topic. Who knows, you might learn something from the thread, or teach someone else…isn’t that kind of what we’re here for?
