Poorest country in western hemisphere

I’ve seen it said many times since the earthquake that Haiti is the “poorest country in the western hemisphere”. If you Google it then the Haiti CIA World Factbook page is the first result.

By what definition is it the poorest?

Guinea-Bissau is poorer by both total and per capita GDP (nominal and PPP):

Or do they simply mean the poorest country that’s close to the american continents?

Guinea-Bissau is in Africa and thus not in the western hemisphere.

Although West Africa and some parts of Europe are west of the Greenwich Meridian, when people say “Western Hemisphere”, they generally mean the Americas and the Pacific islands.

What yabob said. When people say the Western Hemisphere, they usually don’t really mean the Western Hemisphere.
