LOVE this show. Well I loved it back when it was originally on VH1 and I had cable.
There is a new version now, weekday afternoons at 12 and 12:30 on VH1! Woohoo!
Weird timing but whatever. Who doesn’t time-shift their shows anyway?
I just watched all of the new videos on the show’s Web site and I must say they did a great job bringing the original format back. The snark is great and they have great insight into the videos.
And they picked great videos - I knew most of the songs and that is just with a passing interest in modern pop music. They went as far back as the 90s for videos and with 60 (44) minutes to fill A DAY I’m sure they’ll reach further back.
I LOVED this show back in the day. I’ve always been surprised and saddened that no video from it is on YouTube anywhere. I’m sure it’s a copyright thing, but I’ve gotten so used to YT having anything and everything my brain asks for that when it lets me down I get almost offended.
They probably issued a huge number of “takedown notices” to remove all the clips. This is what passes for a promotional strategy in the media world of today.
Thanks for the heads up! Maybe I’ll remember some names of both artist and songs on the Top 40. I can’t keep my Neos seperated from my Chris Browns and LMOA could be the same group that made Like A G6 for all I know.
Ah, but Pop Up Video is a great way to familiarize yourself with those songs – you’ll come away with LOTS of tidbits about the song, the video, and the artist.
This is quite true. I’ve already learned about Kesha, Shakira and Brittany. And I had no idea Chris Brown was a “baby” (well he was when he made the video they showed).
I always loved PUV too, but a part of me always wondered just how accurate the information was. It’s pretty trivial, and definitely fun, but the skeptic in me asked, “Is that true?” regarding some of it (although I can’t think of any specific examples at the moment).
I get the impression their sources are extras and interns. Some amusing bits -
In the Mariah Carey video called “Touch My Body”, the germophobic Carey’s
co-star never actually touches her body.
I loved PUV back in the day. There were plenty of clever little touches and unexpected things that they did with the format. I just watched an old Ace of Base video which feature pop-ups about stomach illnesses, which made a passing remark that well, “flu” backwards is Ulf. You know, like Ulf in Ace of Base.
