Kidney failure is staged. Some of my friends have mild kidney failure due to diabetes, but they’re not also 88 wirh pneumonia.
Plenty of hospitalized elderly patients get better. I wish Francis a quick recovery.
I’m pretty sure some kidney failure actually happens in real life. It isn’t all conspiracies.
Yes, I know what you meant.
Some good news (although too early to say for sure he will recover):
Bad news today. The Pope suffered a coughing fit, which caused him to vomit, which he aspirated, which caused a breathing crisis, which led the doctors to put him back on assisted breathing.
yep, def. not a good day for anybody 88 or so …
He got better over the weekend, but had another attack today. I get the feeling this will be two steps forward, one back, then two forward, two back. . .
Probably more like 2 back, 1 forward, 2 back, 1 forward.
He’s most likely in terminal decline. Not being able to breath adequately takes a lot out of the rest of one’s body.
I agree.
Most likely, he’s on a CPAP or something similar.
This is my read, too. I keep expecting the update to be, “he died”
Too pooped to Pope.
Maybe his strategy is to lay back and let the infection punch itself out- play rope-a-pope if you will.
Good thing puns are venial sins.
But yeah, the situation is obviously that he needs to be under care 24/7. I don’t see the likelihood of abdication at this point when it’s a day-to-day thing.
It should not be unprecedented for a Pope to linger a while in his late stage of decline — see JP2 for a recent reminder. Though one does suppose that before there were the 24hr news cycle and the social networks it would happen mostly out of sight of the general public (if it involved prolonged illness as opposed to something sudden-onset).
Yeah, this feels like watching my father decline from COPD in his final couple of weeks. Too weak to fight it.
Currently reported to be on high-pressure humidified O2 via nasal prongs, to be back on some kind of oxygen mask tonight.
Meanwhile, potential replacement cardinals are circling…
Some good news!
Good for him personally, but the Church “C-suite” is now in a state of suspended animation until he finally dies. I am not up on the internals of the RCC, but no large organization deals well with functional paralysis at the top. Plus of course the “distraction” of all the lesser movers & shakers jockeying to be the next Pope instead of mostly doing whatever their day job really is.
Pope joke:
During one of his visits to the USA, the Pope is out for a sightseeing tour when he asks his driver if he can drive for a bit; he never gets to, being cooped up in the PopeMobile all the time. After some pleading, the driver gives in, they switch places and the pontiff floors it. A few miles later, a local LEO pulls them over, exits his vehicle, takes a look at the occupants and gets on the radio to his supervisor. I just pulled over somebody really important. Who is it? asks the chief. I’m not sure, but his chauffeur is the Pope!
Some very good news!
That line about a “new stage” is unnervingly close to what QE2’s people were saying about her in late 2021.
