Pope's name choice

I remember a headline from the old National Lampoon:

“John Paul Elected Pope. George, Ringo Miffed.”

My vote? Larry the Papal Guy.

I vote for Pope Ralph, a fat American cardinal with no sense of decorum who gets in zany adventures!

On the mourning stuff shown on all the stations, they had Latin scrolling across the screen, and the name was read as Giovanni somethingorother. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Italian. Did they do the main thing in Latin and show his Italian name, or what?

I like that. Instead of Corky, though, he shoulde be called Carbon and instead of skipping I-III, he should skip I-XIII and be known as Carbon XIV.

Until just now, I’d have sworn I read somewhere the tradition was started by a pope whose given name was Bocca de Puerco [sp?] or “Pig’s Mouth.” Can someone tell me where I might have gotten that idea, or have I just gone mad?

Ioannes Paulus is indeed the Latin version of his name, but I think Italian is also official language in Vatican City. His Italian name is Giovanni Paolo.
I think in practically every language, he’s referred to using the translations of John and Paul, not “John Paul.”

Nitpick

There is a Pope Dionysius

/Nitpick

Ioannes Paulus Secundus, Pontifex Maximus.

For the sake of completeness, the office is formally styled (in English) as Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God.

Wojtyla used to sign documents as Ioannes Paulus PP. II, with the PP allegedly being the abbreviation for Papa.

If the new Pope does indeed adopt this name, will he be allowed to date?

No porky for Corky.

According to St. Malachy, , the last pope, the 112th in his list, will be Petrus Romanus, or Peter the Roman. The next pope (next to last) will be Gloria Olivae, let’s see how that plays out. Reading St. Malachy’s predictions is a bit like reading Nostradamus- if you look for validation you will find it.

“Giovanni”? Interesting.

I’ve always thought he also had in mind the Italian name (nickname?) Gianpaolo.

I’m thinking it will be awhile before we see a Pope Lucifer, Adolph, Martin, Pontius, Judas or George W. Pope Roger also seems like a long-shot.

I was expecting something like “Pope X-TREEEEEMUS”

A serious, and original, choice would be Carolus (Charles in English), after the late Pope’s given name Karol. It’s not been used by a previous Pope, but it’s a good saint’s name

No, no, it would be Pope GoldenPalace.com
