I can add a little dribble of information to what you learned there. I have no direct experience in the opiates biz (we don’t do that poppy gooping stuff here in central Indiana.) However, I read of an ancient urn illustrated with an image of somebody making the traditional spiral slashes on poppy seed pods. The article I read said the pods contained a deadly poison, but the gummy stuff the pods leak out through the slashes doesn’t contain the poison, and it can be processed to opium tar. That’s the raw material for morphine and heroin. How do you do that? I haven’t a clue.
The point I’m trying to make is that the seeds and/or the post-flower pods are pretty dodgy for somebody hoping to get loopy. Unless you have consulted the pros in Afghanistan, where nearly all the world’s opium is harvested, it’s bloody dangerous to try to make your own.
I’m sure that in the 10 years since this article, detection technology has come some way. Anyone know if they can now count the number of poppy seeds you ate in the last 12 months just by looking at a sample of your skin oil?
On the topic of random drug tests, I don’t know anyone who has ever been given one, nor have I. How about anyone here?
also be it poppy pods, the percocets your doctor gave you, or some tar you bought it all shows up the same on a drug test: opiate.
Most drug tests look for the nida 5: cannabis, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines (meth mostly, possibly ADD medications), and PCP. anything else (such as acid or shrooms) and your in the clear, but a poppyseed muffin can fuck ya. aint that nice?
So why are poppy seeds even legal to use as food? As far as I know, possession of pot seeds is illegal in many states, and will get you a stretch in jail in Texas. Yet we can still have poppy seed bagels? What gives?
Because poppy seeds are an established food and making morphine from poppy seeds is a difficult venture.
pot seeds (rather, hemp seeds), while EXTREMELY nutritional, aren’t as established as poppy seeds as food. the reason hempseed is largely unavailable as food is because of the fucked up war on drugs the US government has.
*on a side note i’d suggest frying up your leftover hemp seed with some oil and salt. it makes a tasty snack and is high in essential proteins. or put it in your bird feed. the costly DA eradication fo feral hemp hasnt left our birds one of their best foods.

Some of the laws in this area depend on the intent. Poppy seeds contain minimal amounts of morphine, but if you have enough of them you can infuse them into a tea that will contain a potent dose of the drug. If you do that, you will be guilty of manufacturing a controlled substance, but eating or making poppy seed bagels would not come under that heading.
Alot of places wash the morphine residue off the poppy seeds. Look for ‘dirty’ poppy seeds at bagel shops and places like that. I’ve heard about a pound and a half can make a good tea.
^Educational only, dont do drugs kids!
IANAWhatever would know, but I’m guessing that we do use other poppy seeds. Or, looking at it another way, all poppies are opium poppies. I imagine that the offending chemical is found to some degree in all specimens of the species. There are almost certainly cultivars bred to have higher concentrations of it, but I doubt there are any which are completely free of narcotic.
Yay! I finally get to be an expert. Several years ago I tested positive for pot, and as a result had to submit to more-than-random piss tests. I love good lemon poppoy seed cake, and took great delight in the occasional false positive for opium result. Our company “doctor” didn’t see the humor, and told me to quit eating that delicacy. “fuck you” says me. I could have been fired (I live in CA), but the company doesn’t like the hassle of firing productive people. Tough, doc.
BTW; I was still testing positive for thc metabloites (low levels) nearly three months after I smoked my last joint.
Crazy world, huh!
