Porcupine Tree

I recently discovered Porcupine Tree and am amazed that I have never heard of them before. This is some of the best music I have ever listened to. As I write this I am listening to their album In Absentia and I can confidently say that there is not one bad song on the entire album. The songs are so well put together and carry such a deep sound to them that I would not hesitate to compare them to Pink Floyd. I think Porcupine Tree is just THAT freakin’ good.

Why has nobody heard of them over here in the states? I have mentioned Porcupine Tree to many of my friends and nobody has the vaguest idea of what I am talking about. NOBODY knows who they are. Meanwhile, comparable groups such as Massive Attack and Radiohead (especially) are incredibly popular, yet in my opinion, not nearly as good.

Just listening to some of these songs is enough for me to boldly and confidently state that Porcupine Tree should be (if it isnt already) the future of progressive rock and music in general. People need to listen to them here in the states, because if you aren’t, you are completely missing out.

PS: I have never tried shrooms, but want to (I have actually posted about it the GQ forum). I think this would be great music to listen to while on them. What do you think?

Count me in as a resident of the states who’s heard of Porcupine Tree. They’re not really my thing–Dream Theater’s about as soft as I like my prog–but they should be better known.

Another USA-er who’s heard of them, though I’m with ultrafilter, they’re not really my bag. They’re not bad, though.

I’m a huge fan of Porcupine Tree, though not a USA-er. I’ve got most of their albums, and the latest one.

I haven’t heard it enough though, so I can’t judge it. I tried listening to it, but I think it relies upon heavy metal sound a lot more than the previous “softer” albums. You should try getting “Stupid Dream” or “Lightbulb Sun”, fantastic albums, although the one I really enjoy listening to is “Recordings”.

I cannot stand Dream Theater though… Dunno why, I just don’t like them. Lately I’m hooked on older stuff like Camel and King Crimson.
