When did Blockbuster ever carry porn? :eek: My experiences have been that local mom-n-pop video stores will have porn (usually in a back room), but the big chains like Blockbuster were strictly R-rated or tamer.
IIRC, this restriction came from the United States, as part of the surrender agreement after WWII.

Blockbuster does not now and never has carried true porn. Their “family-friendly” image would be tarnished; they carry only movies with ratings from G to R. Any movie released with an NC-17 must be re-edited to an R version to make Blockbuster’s shelves.
However, they will hypocritically carry the latest Shannon Tweed titfest or any of the generically titled erotic thrillers (“pick a word from this list: Carnal, Exotic, Dangerous, etc.; and a word from this list: Lust, Obsession, Sin, etc.”), as long as they’re unrated. Go browse the shelves sometime.
They’ll also carry the unrated version of a “major” film (say, Bruce Willis in The Color of Night), but not an unrated indie (say, Todd Solondz’s Happiness). The movie studios will actually show R-rated movies to Blockbuster executives and make further-diluted versions if Blockbuster thinks the material is harder than R.
Blockbuster is evil. Do not rent movies from them.

Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of porn from around the world mirrors Cali-porn-ia, in which the plots are totally underemphasized or nonexistent. Just a little interview, some tease, and or straight up sex. This is especially so in Japan, which a lot is being done “Dirty Debutante” style. There are some like Nin who becomes ambitious and shoot costume or time period porn.
There is a lot of hardcore from Japan. It sometimes depict good setup scenes featuring extensive foreplay, and the women start out wearing ordinary outfits. And…Panasonic makes dildoes?? But as mentioned before, at times it does look like date rape or GHB drug-induced sex. The young women just look there do not look lively at all. At least not Debi Diamond lively.
The game shows in Japan are really weird, and very graphic. Generally, nudity is not considered a turn-on. On the HBO show about Sex around the world, they have a game show in which power is generated by women’s flowing pee. No I’m not kidding.

When I was a lad, I went to see a porn film.
The afternoon cinema was practically empty. There was a courting couple in the back, and a man in a raincoat at the front (it wasn’t raining). :eek:
I sat in the middle and ignored the grunting from the other patrons.
The film was called ‘I’m trying to keep it up’ and had a complicated plot.
Our hero was left a lot of money by an eccentric relative who wanted the hero to marry and start a family within a year.
So our hero had a medical exam to see if he could…perform. The report had good and bad news. Yes, he was fertile - but he only had enough ‘energy’ to have 12 more erections. 
(And he wasted one of those on the dishy nurse who helped examine him).
Now for a plot twist. The alternative inheritor was a sly female who got hold of the medical report, and spent the rest of the film hiring women to seduce the hero and … ‘use up his energy’.
In the end it turned out the report was mistaken and he did get the dosh (plus a lot of seductions). 
They don’t make them like that any more. 
Narrad beat me to it with his/her outline of the Australian movie ratings system. When i moved to the US, i was initially surprised at how many mainstream movies were rated “R”, until i realised that this rating in America is closer to Australia’s “MA” than to its “R”.
A couple of Aussies on this thread have mentioned that they have only ever seen “R” rated porn, which doesn’t generally show any direct genital contact or penetration, and certainly none of the more risque stuff.
I’m sure these Australians are aware that there is a big porn industry in the Australian Capital Territory (sort of Australia’s equivalent to the District of Columbia, for American Dopers). Not only are there heaps of shops and mail-order porn services in the ACT, but there is now apparently a burgeoning porn film industry that even exports to the US and Europe.
The interesting thing is that it is illegal in most (all?) Australian states to sell hardcore porn on video or DVD (magazines are OK), but anyone in any of those states can order hardcore porn from the ACT and still be within the law.
If there are any Australian legal experts on this board, they might want to correct me, but i think that this arrangement goes back to the 1901 Constititution, which states:
So you can’t legally sell the hardcore stuff in New South Wales (although lots of places do, and the cops generally turn a blind eye), but you can order it by mail from Canberra.
