Possible phone scam?

Something wierd happened twice on my phone line today and I’m hoping someone can tell me if this may be some sort of scam.

The phone rings and I answer it, but instead of there being a person on the other end, there is a ringing, as if I had called someone. After 2 or 3 rings, an operator-sounding person comes on and says, “Hold one moment please”. A few seconds later, it disconnects.

I called MCI, but they are idiots. After I explained what was happening, the customer service rep said, “I don’t know what that is”. Well niether do I, you moron. That’s why I’m calling you.

In any case, it just feels like something very fishy is going on and I wondered if anyone could clue me in.

It’s not a phone scam, most likely, but either telemarketers or bill collectors. My understanding is that their phone systems dial automatically, then when you pick up, asks you to hold while you’re switched to an available operator.

I’ve gotten those calls, and it’s always been something like that.

Funny you should say bill collectors. That’s what the MCI rep said. I know I shouldn’t take it personally, but I take great pride in having never paid a bill late in my life and having perfect credit. Bill collector! Feh.

I had dismissed the thought of it being a telemarketer since it disconnects after the operator person says, “hold please”. Why would it disconnect?

Does the line disconnect or does it just go silent? If it is a telemarketer they’re not going to have hold music or ads to warn you.

After being asked to hold, the line is silent. No music.
