Possible SCA variation?

xkcd: Blagofaire is somewhat applicable.

Yup, that’s kind of what I’m shooting for-only reenacted here and now, not the future. It would be a bizarro-world modern LARP.

From fiction, The DaVinci Code to present a skewed take on our view of religion. Similarly, some Chick tracts might survive.

Music should be a mishmash, of course. I suggest that “Never Gonna Give You Up” survive, with hints that it was somehow weaponized, and that the virus of 2165 was an unsuccessful attempt to finally eliminate it.

Some nonfiction material should be included as well, of course. I suggest
-Newspaper accounts of WWI trench warfare.
-A few newsreels from WWII.
-Incomplete reports of the WTC attack.

(Why yes, I am picking things to mostly represent a century of war and religious hysteria. It would make for an exciting game, and we don’t want them to be completely inaccurate, do we?)

The only movie musicals to survive would be “Grease” and “Repo-A Genetic Opera”.

Perhaps you could work in a reimagined Grease as envisioned by Anne Rice?

Well, if it’s fun magazines you’re after, I’d suggest Penthouse for the Letters column alone. Never would reenacting “history” be so enjoyable!

A handful of Popular Mechanics would complete skew our technological ability

Just one or two issues, but they would have to have personal jetpacks and/or flying cars on the covers.

Hey, do you suppose calling it SCA 2000! would break any copyright laws?

I think Green Day’s - American Idiot would say something. Probably make them think being American wasn’t all that. Maybe tie in “Holiday” with the only surviving song from the hit Broadway smash Springtime for Hitler!

I just had a flash of genius! The Dick Tracy movie survives-this would be great for the costumers.

Beautiful.

“In the 20th Century, there were only four colors.”
“Six!”
“Six?”
“Well, parts of it had black and white, too.”

…and endless geek arguments erupt, completing an essential part of any game system.

I’m ruling out The Illuminatus Trilogy for sanity’s sake.
I’m including The Santa Clause just to screw with their thoughts about what we believed, although maybe Dogma would be interesting also. What book, movie or television show do you think should be included to represent our religious beliefs?

Darn, I was hoping there was some info here on an SCA-like recreation of the Jazz Age. (Puts coonskin coat back in the closet…)

Come out of that closet! If you can provide an over-the-top example in the media(book, movie or television) of the Jazz Age, it might get included.
How about Some Like It Hot, or maybe The Untouchables?

There should be a something with a gritty distopia and something where things seem happy and twee. That’ll set off some dissonance. Maybe *1984 *(they might not know its fiction) and… well I can’t think of anything twee.

Book: JOB: A Comedy of Justice by Heinlein

Movie: * Life of Brian*

What about Harlan Ellison’s “Deathbird Stories: A Pantheon of Modern Gods”?

“Pollyanna” might be twee enough.

The book-maybe.
The Disney movie-definitely.

Chicago, or maybe Roxy Hart (with Ginger Rogers, come to think of it, anything with Ginger Rogers)
