In no particular order:
- The Beatles are overrated.
- Baseball is one of the most boring pastimes created by humanity.
- Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t all that attractive, and in fact resembles a goat. (A particularly attractive goat, true, but a goat nonetheless.)
- The penalties for deliberate cruelty to animals, including when done by children, should be a lot higher than they are.
- When determining public policy, everything at the far right and far left end of the opinion spectrum should be tossed out, and the remainder examined for the proper course to take.
So what part of mandatory routine organ harvesting is a “donation”, then?
In random order:
Contrary to the old saying, malice is a more common motive than stupidity for bad behavior.
As a criticism of fiction, “Mary Sue” is almost always either nothing more than a way of bashing a work of fiction without having to openly admit one’s actual motives for doing so; or, it’s motivated by the conviction that art always has to be about grimness and suffering, despair, failure and corruption. There’s also a fairly strong dose of sexism thrown in, with female characters getting labeled “Mary Sue” when the same character would get called something like “cool” or badass" if they were male.
The only motive of significance behind opposition to abortion is hatred and sadism towards women.
Bush and/or Cheney knew that a major terrorist attack from Al Qaeda was probably coming before 9/11 and deliberately looked the other way in the hopes they could use it as an excuse to attack Iraq. And I doubt they even felt even a microsecond of guilt over the people who died then or afterwards.
Religion is almost certainly history’s greatest single evil; it definitely is in the top two or three. If it were to have never existed the world would be a far better place.

Any man who is staunchly pro-life is creepy as hell.
-
There is absolutely nothing wrong with white chocolate, Crocs or declawing one’s cat if it lives its whole life indoors.

Movies from the 70s are the best since the beginning of time and will always be.
-
Instead of the folks who are terrified if atheists and their supposed “lack” of morals, I’m more concerned about the religious who are apparently only restrained because they fear God’s consequences.
-
No one should think that highly of themselves.
- Muslims are OK.
- The French are OK.
- Women who don’t shave their pits are OK.
- Thailand sucks.
- “World Beat” is Sony-digitized American rock sung in a foreign language.
Aside:
This thread is starting to terrify me.
Pish-posh. Felgercarb, horse-hockey. The nature of man far out-weighs the damage religion has wrought.
What? Movies from the 70s ARE the best of all time.
I’ve often felt that way about some posters here. Just saying.
Right? Thank you.
A statement that helps demonstrate how destructive it is; it induces people to turn upon and condemn their own species to defend it.
- Election campaigns should be publically funded
- Income for those with net worth above £1 billion should be taxed at 100%
- Israel openly practices Apartheid
- Economic growth built on consumption/debt is wrong
- I’m pretty done with hearing how tough life is for ‘women’
Phyllis Diller is up there.

Its obvious that virtually any sort of excuse can substitute for religion for people to kill and oppress those of their fellow species. There is nothing uniquely bad about religion as opposed to other forms of ideology in this regard.
- Abortion is the taking of human life and thus should be banned for all circumstances unless the mother’s life is threatened
- It is true liberals can often be sanctimonius, self-righteous, driven by fads etc. but the problem is the conservatives are far worse
- Herms Niel was one of the greatest song composers of the 20th (if not of any) century.
- People should start dressing more formally on all occasions and wear hats
- Hubert Humphrey was the greatest American politician to never have been President
Religion is quite a bit better at it than other ideologies, and more prone to do so. And unlike some of those ideologies systems it provides little if anything of worth to make up for it. Society would collapse without government; it would function fine without religion.

However, pedophiles lack any sort of safe place to come clean and receive help and therapy without fear of social ostracization or imprisonment. Instead, we have pedophiles hiding in the dark corners of the internet and fondling altarboys. How many children would be spared the pain and shame if their abuser had felt comfortable getting help?[/li][/ol]

Video games are not art.
-
The same goes for movies with superheroes in them.
-
Some gender double standards are justified. Saying that it’s possible for a woman to rape a man is just ridiculous. You know that saying from the other thread, about how a man on a date is afraid that the woman will laugh at him, while the woman is afraid that the man will kill her? True.

Politics is boring.

Religion is not necessarily boring, intrinsically, but 99.99% of all conversations people have about it are.

No colour motion picture is better than the best b&w pictures

There should be no interest earned on capital

All major sports stars use performance enhancing drugs

Allergies, phobias and behavioural issues can be cured, often within one session

Up to 95% of our responses are not under our control, therefore punishment should be more lenient for one-time offenders than for repeat offenders
- The Monty Hall problem is a great way to meet people and make new friends.
- The only reason people don’t criticize women more for bad attitudes and behavior is that they will jump on that person, as a group, regardless of the truth of the criticism. A psychiatrist once confided in me that yes, by definition, nearly all women have clinical depression, but everybody is too afraid to say it.
- In a study homosexual/lesbian marriages over a 10 year period in (iirc) Finland, homosexual couples divorced at a rate 80% higher than heterosexuals, while lesbian couples divorced at a 180% higher rate, proving that females are more likely to cause divorce than males.
- Monosodium Glutamate is not only good for you, but it will make your penis huge and thick.
- The SDMB is made up mostly of people who think they’re smarter than everybody else and just registered to prove it. (Oh wait, we’re supposed to post things everybody would DISagree with?)
My take on it: Most people have no real idea of their own mortality, and that’s a good thing. If they did, it would only bring them down. It wouldn’t increase their productivity or quality of life in any way whatsoever. “Perspective” doesn’t make you happy, it just leaves you staring into a black hole. If you do have an experience that makes you aware of your own mortality, the best thing you can do is to forget about it as soon as you can, and go right back to thinking about TV shows and sports results, like any other happy, healthy, moronic person. And keep doing that right up to the day you die.
