Post-marked envelopes - legal proof??

When I was in H.S., my teacher informed us about Living Wills. Most states had no formal laws on the books at that time. Still, he invited us all to produce such a will, using the forms of the day.

We then were told to mail them to ourselves, making sure they were hand cancelled across the seal on the back. This way, as the years went on, it was ample proof that these had indeed been our wishes since 1978, or whatever.

I’ve still got them in the safe deposit box. As far as I could tell, it was a cheap and foolproof way of proving that the envelope was not touched since the day it was posted.
