Post your favorite obscure bands here!

My favorite obscure band is called Tech N9ne (pronounced “nine”) and they are out of K.C., MO. If you like the sort of very fast rap music over beats that are origional and somewhere between frenetic and soporific, this is your band. Twista has nothing on this rapper and his crew.
For something completely different, the Killdares are a band that does a sort of Scottish rockabilly over bagpipes. It is just great!

Second on the Cowboy Mouth. I last saw them in a tiny bar in Dallas. They brought the house down! Their CD is the one that I start every car trip with.

That’s a damn shame. Odin Owns Ye All is one of the best albums I own.

I’ll second the recommendations for Symphony X, Pagan’s Mind, and Dimmu Borgir.

I’ll also add nominations for Emperor (gods among insects), Within Temptation (a little metal, a little goth, a little paganism, a little classical–really good), Arcturus (the most creative band in extreme metal), Therion (go listen to them now!), and Opeth (see the comment for Emperor).

Velocity Girl–though now they’re broken up. Great, great indie rock. Guilded Stars and Zealous Hearts is simply incredible. Sympatico is another good release. What radio rock should be. Not heavy, not hard, not too poppy. Excellent.

Mavis Piggott–harder rock, but not metal and not fast or repetitive enough for punk. Some have called them grunge-like but I don’t really see the comparison except in a pacing sense. Their first release, Late Bloom, and their most recent release, In A Dark Suit, are gorgeous and compelling. Hard to find releases now but worth it.

Mine would be The Enid.

“The only band on the planet to have successfully fused rock based music with the power, dynamics and scale of symphonic classical music. They are the absolute masters of their art and their achievements over more than twenty years of creative work set them apart from everything else which calls itself progressive”

It don’t matter if your pants of shiny, if your dick is big or your dick is tiny. It don’t matter that they got airplay - Cuz they’re still oscure to the majoritay.

Added to the fact the last time I checked, Come on Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa, Doolittle & Bossanova were only available state side as UK imports (or Boston used CD shops).

Most of these may not be obscure in the technical sense, but none of the people *I *know had ever heard of them …

Flogging Molly–Traditional Irish meets Pop Punk

Nerf Herder–Humorous, punky, and Star Wars-themed! And any band that has a song called Pantera Fans In Love is alright by me.

Reel Big Fish–Kind of a ska/punk deal. Lots of horns, lots of very funny lyrics.

Well, Flogging Molly had a track on the Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 soundtrack, and [b[Reel Big Fish**'s video for Sell Out was in heavy rotation on MTV for a while.

I just picked up an album from Gals Panic, called I Think We Need Helicopters. It’s good, non-angry punk. Think male, geeky, more guitar-heavy Go-Go’s and you won’t be far off. I’ll admit, the reason I got it in the first place is that it’s named after a pornographic arcade game.

Oooooh, I love accordians! My favourite topic! Especially Irish trad music on them. I’m learning to play one myself. Couldn’t tell from the link if you mean Johnny Og Connolly or his father. Although the father is technically a melodeon player. By the way, I know or know of five John Connollys, four play accordian and one plays melodeon!

P.s. If you like Sharon Shannon, you might want to look into Josephine Marsh, another cool young accordian player. Any more accordian tips, give me shout.

And I just found out that Josephine’s got her own website. Do check it out. Highly recommended.

Would it impress you if I told you I roomed with Brian of the V-Girl for two years in the 80s? I remember when he bought his first guitar.
