In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain set an NBA record by scoring 100 points in a single game. In what city did the game take place?
Hershey PA
Yep. How did you happen to know that? It’s not the first place that spings to mind for an NBA game.
I knew it too. It’s common sports trivia.
Lived in Philly area where it’s very well known and as above it’s generally well known. It was years before the Sixers had a consistent location in its nameplace. Any time I’ve seen the game discussed this bit was highlighted.
Also in that game, Chamberlain set another NBA record by making 28 of 32 free throws. That record was tied in 1984 by Adrian Dantley of the Jazz, who made 28 of 29 FTs in a game against the Rockets.
That’s remarkable for two reasons. The first being his career .511 free throw percentage, and the second that he was shooting free throws ‘underhand’ that night but he abandoned that technique because it made him ‘feel silly.’
Is it commonly known? I heard it somewhere, once, and it stuck in my head because I’ve been to Hershey. I even went to a hockey game in that building.
Yes, pretty much any American sports trivia fan would know this.
ETA: Primarily because it’s such a revered number in the game. Probably first learned about Wilt’s 100 point game when I was 7.
Agreed. I was certainly less than 10 years old when I learned this fact.
That’s why I thought it would be a good question. The record is famous, and a nice, round number so it’s easy to remember. But as I said, when it’s discussed I’ve rarely heard the location mentioned.
Chamberlain didn’t play for the Sixers when he scored 100 points. He played for the Warriors, the team that currently resides in San Francisco (where they moved in the same calendar year as the 100 point game.) It was a few years later than he was traded to the Sixers.
When Wilt scored his 100 points the Sixers were still the Syracuse Nationals.
The attendance of the 100 point game was around 4100. Wilt said that many more people than that over the years told him that they were there.
Right. I remembered the city but forgot about the team shuffle. Could still say a Philly NBA team had to wait for a regular gig in town.

Of all the major sports, I suspect basketball is the one that has gone through the most change since the post-war period in terms of the professionalism and skill of the players.
Who is the only NFL team to have only drafted ONE quarterback in the first round in their history, and who was it?
New Orleans Saints - Archie Manning in 1971.
The 1992 U.S. men’s basketball Dream Team went through the entire Olympics at such a torrid pace that they never felt compelled to call a single timeout.
Two NBA players have won both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards in their first season. Who are they?
Wilt Chamberlain (1959-1960 season)
Wes Unseld (1968-1969 season)
Since 1895, how many men have held the Major League Baseball record for career home runs and who are they?
Four Roger Connor 1895 - 1920
Babe Ruth 1921 - 1973
Hank Aaron 1974 - 2006
Barry Bonds 2007 - present
I didn’t see this mentioned here.
Who is the only player to hit a home run but not be credited with a run scored?
Bengie Molina
He hit a ball that was ruled off the wall and with his blinding speed he stopped at first. A pinch runner came in before the challenge was made. A challenge found it was actually a home run. The pinch runner ran the rest of the bases and was credited with the run scored. Baseball Reference refutes the call but that’s how it stands.
