Well, this is quite wrong and false modesy - you will be missed, you’ve definitiely contributed a great deal of value (although rather waspishly from time to time;) ) and I’m sorry you’re not hanging around.
By the way, was that my article on evenly divided courts you mean? Couldn’t remember if I’d sent you a copy.

I’m going to miss a lot of names on this list as well.
I can understand those who have trouble with the idea of “paying to provide content”, though I don’t share that issue. I can understand those who just don’t participate enough anymore to make it worth $5.
What I really don’t get is the “it’s just a message board” response. To hear some people talk about it, there are dozens of message boards out there–and, for some, even local pubs full of real live people–where the collective depth and breadth of knowledge and the general depth and quality of discussion, not to mention the sense of community, are just as good as this one. All I can say is that those people are very lucky, because I haven’t found it myself, on or off the internet.

See, you’re getting way WAY more out of the board than I am. I see it as a repetitive list of people arguing about movies, trying to outgross each other, bickering about politics and asking the same dozen or so questions over and over and over. I can not only find that at any messageboard, I can find it at a pub, a restaurant, the grocery store, etc.
People sorta bug me, and I don’t place as high a value on interacting with them I guess.
For the record, I have been with the board since the AOL days, and have supported it heavily in the past. I own all the Straight Dope books and have re-purchased several of them to give as gifts. I’ve just sort of outgrown it, I suppose, and it never really came to mean as much to me as it did to many, many of the other people here. I’m really pleased to see so many people still placing a high value on it, but am sort of hurt and confused by the controversy, suspicion and name-calling (from both camps) that seems to have erupted.
Here’s to hoping everyone is happy with their choices and makes the most of them! ::raises glass::*

Lib, it’s not that unusual. I don’t like the Pit much at all, myself - it’s where all the festering poisons drain to, and I rarely visit it. Don’t like seeing people I respect displaying that type of vitriol.
In fact, I just ran a search on my name - in my nearly 5 years and 3,900+ posts, I have a total of 5 posts in the Pit - and of those, I think 3 were to threads that got moved there after the conversation degenerated.
I’m just a Mundane-Questioning-Debating kinda guy, I guess.
See, and this attitude is what I DON’T understand. We’re not paying to provide content…we’re paying to exchange ideas with other intelligent people. If all the people who have this particular issue want to do is write essays for other people to read, they should have them on their own web space anyhow.
I find it depressing that people really HAVE been using this board just to basically hear the sound of their own voices. It kind of confirms Pittings that have accused folks of not being willing to listen to others’ points-of-view. And THAT, my friends, is sad.
The people who are leaving, not out of some grand philosophical statement, but just because they wanna? You’ll be missed.
For various reasons I’ve discussed in several other (mostly Pit) threads, I will not be subscribing either. I don’t think I’m all that known here, but if anyone is looking for me, they can find me at my site here.
