Postcards From The Edge: how autobio?

Yeah, I know the movie is 20 years old, but I never saw it until today (thanks, Blockbuster! ). I really enjoyed it. I was wondering how autobiographical it (or the novel it was based on) is? Obviously, you can’t ignore the parallels between the main character and Carrie Fisher. But how many parallels were there? Has Ms. Fisher ever come right out and said it was a kind of autobiography?

I read the book a while ago. The movie is a bit different than the book, as I recall. When the book came out, this question of “how” autobiographical it was came up, and I recall Fisher’s answer being along the lines of “mostly.”

The way I see it, it is like Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous” - the events did take place, but perhaps with not the exact people or in the exact sequence.

I figured it was probably something like that. Of course, calling it a “novel” allows her to make changes to it to make it more flattering/less flattering and/or just funnier. I’ve seen her in a couple of interviews. She’s a very funny woman.

Maybe I’ll check out the book.
