“Countless journalists have been harassed, threatened and killed. It has been my honour to belong to all those categories and now especially the last.”
Lasantha Wickrematunge wrote this prescient editorial shortly before his death. Well worth reading, even if – like me – you know nothing about Sri Lanka.
In a country dominated by Fox News and their ilk I’d forgotten that journalism used to be a ‘noble’ profession. I think we pay a lot of lip service to Freedom of Speech in the US but we’ve forgotten what it’s like not to have it. It’s especially grievous of me since as a so-called African-American it was only a short time ago when it beared greatly on my quality of life.
