I don’t have an actual example to kick things off, but I thought we could use a counterpoint to the ‘Posts that aged poorly’ thread. I know I’ve seen several posts over time where someone said “I totally called [X] in my [previous post from ‘Y’ date in the past]”.
So here’s a chance to toot your own horn! Or toot it for someone else. Have you been a ‘Nostra-Dope-us’, or know a post where another Doper was one? I think posts such as those in which someone predicted a negative outcome that got push-back, but then the prediction turned out to not only be correct, but the actual outcome was even worse, would count (the iconic example of which might be the Dopers who predicted early on in trump’s Presidency how bad things might get, and others said things like “no, he’ll be normalized or restrained by the checks and balances of the office”. And then…).
As with the ‘aged poorly’ thread, I’m keeping this in the Pit since, despite the more positive slant of the premise, the correct predictions or discussions thereof may likely still involve much anger and invective.
I’m not predicting, hoping or intending that it will. Just that the subject of any predictive post that aged well may be angry and profanity-laden, so I decided to put it in the Pit, just in case. But I’m hoping, as I stated in the OP, that this will be a more positive counterpoint to the ’ Posts that aged poorly’ thread. There’s a lot of very smart Dopers here fighting ignorance every day, and I’m sure there are a lot of posts that did age well.
Please don’t junior-mod me. If you don’t think this is in the right forum, flag a real mod.
Great examples of what I was hoping for, and very prescient. At the time of your later post, dating from Feb. 7 2020, I don’t think the Coronavirus was even on my radar yet at that point. It wasn’t until late Feb, beginning of March, that I started to develop a mindset of 'better disinfect hands after touching doorhandles at work", and not until mid-March that we were told to work from home ‘for the next six weeks’. It wasn’t until then that it got really real for me. Fortunately none of my friends or loved ones got very sick or died from Covid, though I don’t think I know anyone personally who never contracted it.
Yeah, reading back in that thread, I see that in January I had absolutely zero concern about it (hey, I did write “right now” ) Well, that certainly changed as the months went on, but that’s the other thread …
In the TV series thread, I was watching Game of Thrones and I accurately predicted who would win in the beginning of season four of my watch. Unfortunately, this was years after the show actually ended, but I still claim it.
I’m a Simpsons fan, so I appreciate your use of the word ‘cromulent’. It’s a perfectly chosen…what’s a good recently invented word for the right adjective?
Working from memory. Gadarene penned Gadarene’s Law: any post with a grammatical correction will include a grammatical error.
@Scylla had a memorable thread about blimps, as well as a thread about his adventures with auto-waterboarding, which received some attention beyond this message board.
@Diogenes_the_Cynic commented that the speaker of the 2004 Democratic Convention (Barack Obama) would one day be President.
Too many to mention on this topic, but during early 2022 when Russia quite obviously was mobilized to invade Ukraine, there were lots of people who felt Russia’s massive preparation wasn’t a prelude to an invasion (wrong). Once it did commence, others predicted that all of Ukraine (or at least all of east Ukraine, including Kiev), would fall to the Russians, but it hasn’t.
It’s hard to blame folks when even the CIA got it wrong. Few people understood that Russia truly was reckless enough to try something like this, and weak enough to fail. Few understood how strong Ukraine is, nor that they could hold off Russia for even 1 year, let alone 4, and that Russia would be dumb enough to keep throwing its young men into this meatgrinder.
Anyway, hats off mainly to those who predicted Ukraine’s astonishing will and ability to push Russia back. I don’t think that was easily seen at the time.
I should have said behind the table. They were trying to get him to bend on the way out, but he couldn’t. If I try to edit, it messes up the link for some reason.
