I usually enjoy reading threads here, for the most part, but Pit threads have a certain flow to them. Oftentimes I don’t even have to read the replies. I look at the user name and know what to expect. I’m almost never surprised. Related to this, one phenomenon keeps raring its ugly head: the pile-on. The threads seem to oftentimes consist of an OP followed by several of the usual suspects disagreeing and calling the OPer stupid. Once it gets going, I have to think that posters who may actually agree with the OP don’t even bother posting in the thread. Observe.
OP: [says something slightly controversial, perhaps with a strong opinion about any subject at all]
Then…
Marley23 undoubtedly will chime with something condescending leaning to the contrary. It will be very matter-of-fact, very know-it-allish. Perhaps he’ll link to a thread where this was already discussed and be dismissive.
Vinyl Turnip will, through a truckload of eloquence, attempt to make the OPer feel stupid. I have to think he’s successful most of the time, the bastard.
Guinastasia will drop a monosyllabic one-liner full of rage aimed directly at the OPer while not quite understanding the OPer’s post.
If she (he?) doesn’t just close the thread, fluiddruid will threaten such in a tone that’s similar to that of a elementary school teacher. She (he?) will also most certainly disagree with the OP while she’s (he?) at it, and there is a good possibility of some venom here.
mhendo/RickJay/whoever else that likes to show how smart they are will write dissertations, complete with footnotes and bibliographies explaining why the OP is wrong. It’s usually a pretty convincing argument, but sometimes their diatribes are misplaced and inappropriate.
Shagnasty will give us a tall tale that slightly relates to the OP. It will be entertaining, though. And likely ignored.
Justin Bailey, smelling OPer blood, will call the OPer a fucking idiot, just to get a kick in. But he’s never the first. He sits back and waits to see in which direction the thread will go, then he’ll chime in.
What Exit? who appears to be a nice guy is sure to make an irrelevant appearance in a thread while not really agreeing or disagreeing with the OP. He will get flamed.
QED will drop a link and call the OPer the stupidest poster alive.
And so on…
I should mention: The lone person on these boards who will usually agree with an OP and is usually shunned:
Omegaman likely will share an incoherent thought seemingly in agreement with the OP that with the right amount of marijuana, a connection can be made to the OPer’s post. He’ll get flamed too may even suspended.
