Is that when people became lazy? I’ll keep an eye out for that on the “On This Date” section of the newspaper.
I don’t have much to add except that I hate both acronyms. SCOTUS is just too close to “scrotum” for me.

Give them time. With laws titled such as PROTECT, USAPATRIOT and PROMESA already in the books, it seems that Congress is all about the “they really wanted it to spell out SHIELD” gimmick, but they haven’t gone for it with job titles. Yet.
I’ve been referring to Samuel L. Jackson as the BAMFOTUS for years.

One rarely hears these acronyms OCONUS.
My first assignment in the Air Force was a morning radio newscaster in Seoul. In 1988, we still had AP and UPI wire teletype machines that we gathered our newscast content from, and that was the first time I had seen it.
The top U.S. Navy admiral used to be CINCUS, but with the onset of WWII they decided “sink us” maybe wasn’t the best homophone, under the circumstances.
Nowadays they use CINCPAC and CINCLANT for the fleet commanders, and the CNO (Chief of Naval Operations) for the big cheese.
