I have said it before and I will most likely say it again. I know that a lot of people disagree with me, but the song Stan by Eminem really gets to me. The last letter that the fan writes is the always affects me the most. Especially the part in bold.
Dear Mr. I’m too good to call or write my fans,
This will be the last package I ever send your ass. It’s been 6 months and still no word. I don’t deserve it? I know you got my last two letters. I wrote the addresses on them perfect. So this is my cassete I’m sending you, I hope you hear it. I’m in the car right now. I’m doing 90 on the freeway. Hey slim, I drank a fifth of vodka, you dare me to drive? You know the song by Phil Collins In the Air of the Night about that guy who could have saved that other guy from drowning but didn’t then Phil saw it all and at his show he found him. That’s kind of how this is. You could have rescued me from drowning, now it’s too late. I’m on a thousand downers now I’m drowsy and all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call. I hope you know I ripped all of your pictures off the wall. I loved you Slim, we could have been together. Think about it, you ruined it now. I hope you can’t sleep and you dream about it, and when you dream I hope you can’t sleep and you scream about it. I hope your conscience eats at you and you can’t breathe without me. See Slim…(woman screams in background) Shut up bitch, I’m trying to talk. Hey Slim, that’s my girlfriend sreaming in the trunk. But I didn’t slit her throat. I just tied her up. See I aint like you, cuz if she suffocates she’ll suffer more and then she’ll die too. Well gotta go, I’m almost at the bridge now. Oh shit, I forgot, how am I supposed to send this shit out? (squealing tires, breaking glass, and a splash)
The ending to this song is also great.
I’m glad I inspire you, but Stan, why are you so mad? Try to understand that I do want you as a fan. I just don’t want you to do some crazy shit. I seen this one shit on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick. Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge and had his girlfriend in the trunk and she was pregnant with his kid. In the car they found a tape but they didn’t say who it was to. Come to think about it…his name was…it was you. Damn
There are a few Beatles lyrics that hit me pretty hard:
Why she had to go? I don’t know, she wouldn’t say"Yesterday"
Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name. Nobody came. Father McKenzy, wiping his hands as he walks from the grave. Nobody was saved “Eleanor Rigby”
*Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see. It’s getting hard to be someone, but it all works out, it doesn’t matter much to me * "Strawberry Fields Forever
And of course, Paul Simon has a few gems. I know a woman. Became a wife. These are the very words to describe her life. She said a good day aint got no rain. A bad day is when I lie in bed and think of things that might have been.
I know a father who had a son. he long to tell him all the reasons for the things he done. He came a long way just to explain. He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping, then he turned around and headed home again.
God only knows, and God makes His plan. The information is unavailable to the mortal man. We’re working our jobs, collect our pay, believe we’re gliding down the highway, when in fact we’re slipsliding away. “Slip Sliding Away”
And a rock feels no pain. And an island never cries*
And Sting’s master piece “Fragile”
*
Fragile
If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one
Drying in the colour of the evening sun
Tomorrow's rain will wash the stains away
But something in our minds will always stay
Perhaps this final act was meant
To clinch a lifetime's argument
That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could
For all those born beneath an angry star
Lest we forget how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star, like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are, how fragile we are
On and on the rain will fall
Like tears from a star, like tears from a star
On and on the rain will say
How fragile we are, how fragile we are
How fragile we are, how fragile we *
“I’m So Happy I can’t Stop Crying” She says the kids are fine, that they miss me. Maybe I can come and babysit sometime. She says are you OK? I was worried about you. I said, I’m so happy, I can’t stop crying. I’m so happy, I’m laughing through my tears…
I do the best I can in my given time. A kid should be with his mother, everybody knows that. What can a father do but babysit sometime?
That last line always hits me really hard. I don’t know why.
Tears on the sleeve of a man
Don’t want to be a boy today
I heard the eternal footman
Bought himself a bike to race
And Greg, he writes letters
And burns his CDs
They say you were something in those formative years
Well hold onto nothing as fast as you can
Well…
Still…
Pretty good year
—Tori Amos - Pretty Good Year
Sometimes it’s like someone took a knife, baby edgy and dull
And cut a 6-inch valley through the middle of my soul
At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
And a freight train running through the middle of my head
—Bruce Springsteen - I’m on Fire
And kind old King George sent mother a note
When he heard that father was gone
It was, I recall, in the form of a scroll
With gold and all
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs hidden away
And my eyes stll grow damp to remember
His majesty signed it with his own rubber stamp
It was dark all around
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C
They were all left behind
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying
And that’s how the high command took my daddy from me.
—Pink Floyd - When the Tigers Broke Free (not on any album, only in the movie “The Wall”).
Well, Ray Davies is about as good as rock lyricists get, and the “Arthur” album represents his best work. I don’t know that any other young man has ever written so well about growing old, and seeing long-cherished dreams fade and die.
I won’t cite songs or print snippets- I just pay tribute to the Kinks and the entire “Arthur” LP.
Steely Dan’s “Don’t Take Me Alive” is about someone losing it and heading up the watchtower, rifle in hand and about to inflect some random justice to the innocents below.
From memory:
Agents of the law
Luckless pedestrians
I know you’re out there with rage in your eyes and your megaphones
Saying “All is forgiven. Mad Dog surrender.”
How can I answer a man of my mind can do anything
CHORUS and then
Can you hear the evil crowd?
The lies and the laughter
I hear my inside
The mechanized hum of another world
Where no sun is shining
No red light flashing
Here in this darkness, I know what I’ve done
I know all at once who I am
For every whacko who goes berserk and then on a killing spree I swear I think that last stanza is exactly what they are thinking.
*They call me white devil…black Jesus…Heaven’s closing…Hell’s freezing…ego trippin…scripts keep flippin…Bloods keep bloodin…Cryps keep crypin…
Sex junkie lookin for a healer…you can be the leper girl, and I can play the healer…*
These lyrics were both from Everlast’s song White Devil Black Jesus which I could listen to all day and not get tired of…also the lyrics from Hurt by NIN are great…I know a song hits me right there when my nipples go hard
Years go by will I still be waiting
For somebody else to understand
Years go by if I’m stripped of my beauty
And the orange clouds raining in my head
Years go by will I choke on my tears
Till finally there is nothing left
One more casualty
You know we’re to easy easy easy…
“Silent All these Years” by Tori Amos…another one of those songs
so you call this your free country, tell me why it costs so much to live
3dd, ‘loser’:
you’re getting closer
to pushing me off of life’s little edge
cause i’m a loser
and sooner or later you know i’ll be dead
you’re getting closer
you’re holding the rope and i’m taking the fall
cause i’m a loser, i’m a loser
dixie chicks, ‘let him fly’:
there’s no mercy in a live wire, no rest at all in freedom
and the choices we are given, it’s no choice at all
the proof is in the fire, you touch before it moves away
but you must always know how long to stay and when to go
I agree with the 3 doors down nominations!! Just got the CD, and it has been playing nonstop in my CD player since then. Very powerful indeed!! I concur!
DigitalMuse – i bought it when it came out. Love it. They used to play in the club my sister bartends at down in Biloxi Mississippi. The lyrics are great and the music is rockin’.
racinchikki- I heard their f"kryptonite in March and fell in love, but wasn’t able to get the CD until yesterday. They’re coming to town on Thursday and tickets sold out-WAAH!!
Okay well since Ogre doesn’t want whole songs I’ll put exerpts though both of the songs are wicked cool and should be seen in their entirity. Both are by Savatage from their cd Streets: A Rock Opera
I forgot to put this one up too its Lightning Crashes by Live
One main reason why it send shivers down my spine (Other then the really cool music and words) is cuz one of my RP characters is an angel (well not exactly but she is very angelic in nature… wings etc…) and she has pale blue eyes so this always reminds me of her. (FYI the c is DarkChylde Death aka Amara Chandra whom my quote is from) I think its almost freaky since it mentions someone dying in the song and stuff… (I created her awhile ago before I ever heard the song)
