Someone already mentioned holst. I would add Jupiter “the bringer of jolly”. From elgar Pomp and circunstance, and as an argentinian Ginastera’s malambo from his ballet “estancias”
Stravinsky’s Firebird has already been mentioned; I’d like to add that The Rite of Spring also nicely fills the bill – if causing a riot isn’t powerful enough for ya, I don’t know what is.
R. Vaughn Williams’ Folk Song Suite, especially movements 1 & 2. 3 is more triumphant/celebratory.
Oooh, now that I think about it, there’s got to be something by Stockhausen which’ll fit the bill. Anybody got any suggestions?
Danse Macabre by Camile Saint-Saens is dark and foreboding, and I’m sure you’d recognize it. Also, from Saint-Saens, try his Symphony #3 in C-minor (“Organ Symphony”). Especially the final movement. The rendition I listen to most often just blows me away, especially when the organist (Virgil Fox) really lets go.
Also by Holst his military suites (number 1 and number 2) Form Sylvia (by leo delibes) procession of baco (I don’t know the name in english but is the roman god of wine). Procession of Sardar of the caucasus sketches by Ippolitov-ivanov.
