Pre-diabetes

I had my yearly physical exam yesterday; my doctor says I have pre-diabetes, something I’ve never heard of. My fasting gluclose level is 115, she says, which puts me at about the middle of the pre-diabetes range. She says I need to cut back on calories and fats; in addition I need to increase my physical activities.

I guess I need to join the millions of old bastards who obsess about their damned day to day diets. I really resent it since I am only sixty-six and I am NOT old; I’m just getting started. I’ve always eaten like an anaconda: once a week or so I gorge on whatever’s handy, then I don’t eat again for another week. (That is only a slight exageration) The thing is, I don’t know squat about “good nutrition” and I hear and read so many different things about it that I am completely baffled as to what I should or should not eat.

I need advice as to where I can go for the straight dope on choosing a healthy diet to follow. As always, any information will be greatly appreciated.

I feel for you. I’ve had this condition since my late 30’s. Since you should be following the same regimen as people with diabetes, do a search for “diabetes” and you’ll find a number of threads with good advice.

I highly recommend Whitaker’s Reversing Diabetes, a mass-market paperback that cites research, has no exclamation points, and is level-headed. I followed his diet, vitamin/supplement, and exercise guidelines and lost a lot of weight and got my A1c into low normal range (supervised by my doctor).
