Precise meaning of "100% silicone"

I got into an argument about this the other day. My friend insists that there is literally no difference between any products called “100% silicone”, because they are all pure silicone and nothing else. All the different kinds, such as kitchen & bath versus window & door, are pure marketing and it’s all a scam. I reason that this cannot be true, and that “100% silicone” isn’t quite that literal of a term. But if it’s not, I can’t think of what it would, exactly, mean.

There is no such thing as “pure silicone” in the sense that “silicone” is not a single, specific product, but rather the name of a group of dozens of chemically distinct polymers with their own properties.

There are bathroom caulks that are silicone mixed with acrylic (IIRC), so my guess is that “100% silicone” just means “there isn’t another type of caulk mixed in.” Furthermore, caulk at least contains coloration, so that’s something added that isn’t silicone.

I don’t know if this is the case with the products you are talking about but beware of the “contains 100% pure (anything)” statement in the advertising. All it means is that there is some unspecified amount of pure “anything” among all the other ingredients.

Really? You’re saying I could put out a product that was 1% butter and 99% margarine and write “contains 100% pure butter” on the label? Somehow, I doubt that!

Check out juices at your local supermarket sometime. Contains 100% per juice, then elsewhere you’ll see ‘from concentrate’.

For butter it they don’t bother making stuff up unless it’s in a product. Then you’ll see things like ‘made with real butter’ then read the ingredients to find butter is the last thing on the list, well behind vegetable shortening.

That’s completely different. “From concentrate” generally means they removed most of the water, shipped it somewhere, rehydrated it (and possibly blended it), and packaged it. Something can absolutely be 100% juice from concentrate and still contain nothing but juice and water.
