Preferred Pet Treats

As the last post said, chocolate is dangerous for dogs and cats. Also, anything with caffeine is dangerous to them. It can cause nerve damage. So try to keep them away from tea, coffee, soft drinks, etc.

Troub, your puppy is SOOOO cute! I love that breed of dog.

My kittens love treats, no matter what kind. They love Pounce in the cans and come running when you shake it. They go nuts for the ones in the pouches. I have to hide those because I’ve come downstairs to find the torn, chewed up bag lying empty at the bottom of the stairs. I think they would rather have those than the occasional can of food I might buy them. And since they are better for them, I’m much rather give them those than the wet food.

Shane, my mutt, loves tomatoes. She prefers cherry tomaotes, but the skin has to be split–she doesn’t like them with the skin still intact. Last summer, when we grew copious amounts of cherry tomatoes, Shane always had to be involved in the picking processes–we’d just throw the split-skin tomatoes to her. Happy dog! She loves all kinds of other things too, but most have been covered by previous posters: cantaloupe, brocolli, etc.

None of our cats really get treasts. They are more than fat enough without that. Kismet, the bad cat, loves corn bread. If we make muffins and don’t get the leftovers put away, he sneaks off with them. Other bread-type products aren’t really safe around him either, but corn bread is his favorite.

Ted, Sybil, and Max, our other cats, get canned cat food sometimes, and that’s good enough for them.

Grape and raisin (dried grapes) toxicity is well documented in dogs. Although the exact substance that causes the toxic reaction is not yet known, dogs should not eat grapes and raisins because even small amounts can prove to be fatally toxic for a dog.

Dogs of any age, breed, or gender may be affected. Grapes and raisins are bad for dogs because one of the most serious complications of grape/raisin toxicity is acute (sudden) kidney failure with lack of urine production (anuria). However, kidney failure is not seen in all dogs after ingestion of grapes or raisins, and again, the reason why some dogs are affected excessively while others are not is still being studied.

Our long-haired Chihuahua loves macaroni and cheese. Has to be Stouffer’s frozen, the Kraft boxed kind is not even worth sniffing.

Baxter, the oldest cat, likes any cat treat I give him. Halo brand, the stuff from the grocery store, whatever.

Pandora is also ok with any cat treat.

Sebastian doesn’t care about cat treats. He wants his CANNED FOOD! ANY KIND! He’s really a pig for the stuff, and is not eating Baxter’s leftover prescription fatass formula.

But what brings them all together is sharing a nice greasy platter that once held chicken. They all get along to lick the chicken grease. They also come bother me for chicken pieces when I make chicken soup or chicken salad.

I am also N/W AR.
I feed tuna canned in water to the dogs for a mid feed treat and give the cans to the cats ( 8 ) to clean. Dogs also go for regular dog cookies-bone shaped …

The big dog Zeus goes for deer parts from the woods and will guard but no eat rodents or kills he has made.

We stay away from grains in the dog food.

Some of the cats like lunch meat, some like popcorn, all love chicken. one is ‘nuts’ for Triyaki jerky. Several of the cats are just ‘nuts.’

This thread is from over 12 years ago. I doubt if many of the dogs mentioned are still around.

My dog loves anything. He’ll eat Milk Bones, meat and cheese treats called Snawsomes, whatever I give him. Sometimes when I’m having breakfast, I’ll give him a couple of Froot Loops or Crunch Berries.

Dehydrated Sweet Potato. I nuke the sweet potato for a minute in the microwave to make it easier to cut, then cut into french fry strips. Blanch those for another minute or so in beef broth, then in the dehydrator at 130F for 12 hours or so.

Another favorite is chicken jerky. Boneless skinless chicken breasts. Put in the freezer until they start to get “slushy” so they cut easier. Cut into 1/8 to 1/4 inch strips (against the grain), dip in vegetable oil and into the dehydrator at 145 for 6-8 hours, depending on thickness. I turn them after a couple of hours to help keep them from sticking.

100% natural, and much cheaper than commercial preparations of unknown content. Like any treats, though, don’t overdo them.

Anyhow, my dog loves cheese - and can tell when I’m making nachos as soon as I open the refrigerator. Many years ago we gave our kids gingerbread house kits - which never got used and stayed in the closet. I forgot they were there until she demanded I open the closet door right after her dinner. When I saw one she got excited - she clearly could smell it through the plastic. So she loves all treats of any kind.
As for regular treats she had a growth removed from her foot and needed to take some pills. I saw pill treats at Costco - a cylinder with a hole for the pill. No problem giving her the pills using that!

Nor is Zenster, unfortunately. Dude knew some shit about cooking.

Our cat has died since then, but our new one loves Hill’s Prescription Diet Hypo-treats.
