Pregnancy related question

So my friend is due to have her baby any day now. It got me thinking about the process of birth. Now, babies are attatched to the mother via the umbilical cord. Then someone cuts the umbilical cord. That part is pretty straightforward. But, what happens to the other end of the umbilical cord (the part coming from the mother)? Does it just…go back inside of her? Does it get completely removed?

Just a dumb question from someone who never wants to have kids!

It’s attached to the placenta, which is delivered a short time after the baby.

For the uninitiated, the placenta is “delivered” shortly after the birth of the child(ren). In my wife’s case when my daughter was born, the umbilical cord was cut, (I cut it) and the doctor then took the pinching clamps thing that was clamped on both sides of the umbilical cord where I was instructed to cut and wrapped the cord up a few times and used it as a handle to gently pull and help my wife deliver the placenta. It looked like a bloody stewed tomato that was nearly the size of a deflated basketball. Good stuff!

Okay. I figured it had something to do with the placenta. Thanks for the info!
