How big did the prehistoric marine reptiles (mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, etc.) get? I seem to recall that some were not too far away from blue whales in size, but I may not be remembering this correctly. So what’s the straight dope on these fascinating but extinct creatures?
According to Wiki, Mososaurs got to be about 17 meters at most, Icthyosaurs were at most 15 meters, and Plesiosaurs no more than 23 meters. Blue Whales, by comparison, grow to 30 meters in length.
Agiant ichthyosaur has recently been discovered in British Columbia that reached 23 meter in length. While smaller than the largestBlue Whales of the southern hemisphere, it was comparable to those of the northern hemisphere, which are usually 23-24.5 m.
