President Biden Calls for Major Changes to the Supreme Court

Thought you might appreciate this story; gives a view from the north.

TLDR: The Canadian Judicial Council is a formal statutory body, set up by Parliament, to entertain complaints of misconduct against any federally-appointed judge, including judges of the Supreme Court of Canada.

A series of news articles last year highlighted some lower court judges who had made political donations to the governing Liberal party. After the story broke, one trial court judge self-reported that she had made donations, totalling about $700, in the two years after her appointment. Donations to political parties are contrary to the Code of Ethics adopted by the federally-appointed judges. It went to a review body, composed of two judges and one non-judge. They concluded that it was a serious breach, not trivial, but gave the lowest level of sanction, citing the fact that the judge had self-reported and had sought ethical counselling from a judge higher up in the system.

Mentioned in the article is that this is the first time this issue has arisen, which in my opinion also tends to a lighter sanction, to highlight to everyone that this is an issue, even if some aren’t aware of it. The next judge who does it likely won’t find it easy to get a light sanction.

The article outlines the process that is followed for complaints against a judge.

Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell compares Biden’s proposed Supreme Court reforms to the January 6 insurrection.
