Amy Coney Barrett confirmed

Senate Confirms Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court

Hypocritical fuckers. Not that this was a surprise, but still. I am not feeling linguistically creative - maybe some of the rest of you can take over the mantle for purposes of this thread. I am just pissed.

Expand the courts. This is gaining momentum. Expand the courts or have every progressive priority,in addition to basic voting rights, overturned by SCOTUS for a generation.

Oh, just be patient! She will only be a Supreme Court Justice for another 50 years, or so, just wait her out.

R.I.P.

N.B.—The body will be cremated and the
ashes spread on the Potomac.

I am soooo glad I am just about through menopause.

I’d sure hate my legacy to be corrupted by such a despicable move, but perhaps I just have more integrity than her.

She should be ashamed and I hate Mitch McConnell so much.

I doubt there’s any shame anywhere on that side of the aisle.

Cue a generation of liberal voting outrage. At least I hope.

Still relevant after 56 freaking years:

Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness. Have you no sense of deceny? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?

Fuck her. With a bible or a very thick writ.

As Dan Savage would say, not with someone else’s dick.

And this is all that matters, AmIRight?

Quality decisions? Who cares.
The right policy? Whatever.
Getting the country in the right direction? Boring.

Let’s make the Liberals mad ! Ya man! Most excellent!

Fucking asshole.

I don’t think that’s what @Sitnam was saying - I think he was saying that this appointment will (further) energize the left - note he ended with “At least that’s what I hope”.
And it will. Whatever lefties remaining who haven’t voted, are even more pissed now, and that much more likely to vote.

If this isn’t a clarion call to the Democrats who will hopefully be in charged in a few months, I am SO done with this country.

Maybe this thread isn’t the right one for this, but, acknowledging how the GOP has fundamentally broken American Democracy for short term gain, isn’t there a second-level issue (beyond the shenanigans with confirmations over the last four years): that the modern Republican position on the judiciary is so antithetical to a non-partisan approach that a conservative majority is basically declared to be a rubber stamp for enshrining conservative political and religious positions? Like, there’s easily another world in which all three of the most recent justices’ appointments could have fallen under Trump’s presidency, and we’d still be where we are today.

So screw them all for the blatant lying and game-playing (and every American who feels good about it because it means they “win”), but also . . . if we were one conservative majority on the Supreme Court away from disaster, then it was only a matter of time.

And fuck every Republican who thinks that the Supreme Court is the right way to impose personal religious beliefs and prejudices upon other Americans. That goes doubly for the newest worm on the bench.

What’s happened in the last 5 years (starting with no hearings for Garland) has turned the Supreme Court in a political arm.
It should never have been that way and is really quite scary.
What we’ve read about ACB should be disqualifying.
There “should” be any number of candidates that both sides can agree would make a knowledgeable, learned and trustworthy jurist.
It make sense to me that any new SC appt should need a supermajority - even so much as 75% approval. If you can’t get someone whose credentials inspire that sort of respect, then they are the wrong person.
And make no doubt about it - given her short tenure, and her history (including that school board of governership) there must be serious questions about her impartiality.

Yeah. I’m a liberal. I am trying to find SOME bright side. We need to stop to stop herding cats.

Then you’ll eventually end up with no Supreme Court, as justices die off and aren’t replaced, since in today’s hyperpolarized era it would be near-impossible to get 3/4 of the Senate to vote to confirm a nominee.

I don’t hold out much hope for a strong Democrat response though.

Just look at how they have misplayed this appointment (not to say that excuses the Republican shamelessness at all).

Basically no attempt to run out the clock.

And, more importantly, packing the court should have been an explicit threat. It should have been made clear to the GOP and voters that the only reason that such a thing is being considered is because the GOP is essentially already packing the court. The way they’ve played it currently, where they are afraid of how it will play with voters, so are withholding opinion…just looks weak, and it means it both doesn’t work as a threat and it would look bad at some future time if they tried to go through with it (which likely means they never will).

The reason the US is in the mess it’s in is, I’d say, 75% because of the unscrupulous, corrupt Republican party but also 25% because of cowardly, weak Democrats (not all, but too many).

Apologies. My Fingers typed before brain engaged.
