So I just bought a new Yamaha Home Theatre Receiver that’s silver in colour. It has a brushed metal-looking finish to it, and if you touch it, it easily soaks up oils from your fingers or hand or whatereer part of you happens to touch it.
Is there a product on the market, or a technique that will prevent finger oils from staining the finish on this receiver? As of now, I am using my fingernails to push the buttons when the need arises, but I would still like a protective coating just in case anyone else decides to push any buttons or touch it. A perfect, clean receiver fetches a better price when I eventually decide to sell it, and that is why I am so meticulous about keeping it new-looking.
I thought maybe a coat of Mother’s pure Carnauba paste wax would protect the finish, but I don’t want to go that far until I know there are no products designed for this.
Anyone have a suggestion?
There are a multitude of stainless steel “polishes” out there for all of the stainless kitchen appliances so popular now. They make it very fingerprint-resistant.
Just take a little dab on a clean cloth (a kitchen towel works well) and buff the stuf around. It will darken the metal somewhat - you might want to check it on the bottom of the faceplate (assuming the metal wraps around to the underside.)
You want to distribute a very thin layer over the entire surface, then buff it dry. For the tiny amount you’ll need, you might want to get chummy with a neighbor who has stainless appliances rather than buying your own bottle.
It’s not a “forever” process - my dishwasher’s needed treatment about every two months to look spiffy, but between the water, constant touching, assorted dribbles and dog noses, it’s a far different environment than on a shelf in the entertainment center.
My Shanling CD player came complete with some cotton gloves that prevent fingerprints. Hardly ever touch it though - remote does that, although that is metal too.
It’s a bugger to dust though.
