My mom is 76 and was recently diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia. For many years she has occasionally paused during conversations because she can’t quite get the next word out, but evidently this has become much more common in recent months. Her shorthand has also gotten so bad that she has withdrawn from her position as minutes-taker for the meetings in a social club. She’s also having trouble typing.
I haven’t talked to my mom since her diagnosis (I’ll be calling her tonight); the information I have at this point is all second-hand. I’ve read a few web pages about it (if you don’t know what PPA is, here’s one)), but they’re all somewhat vague on prognosis.
Anyone here have experience dealing with a relative who has PPA? What sort of timeline is typically involved? My mom’s health is not great, and expect she won’t be around ten (possibly five) years from now. Is she likely to be severely/completely afflicted by PPA before she dies?
