And she’s still complaining about not getting her peerage. Still doesn’t see that threatening to thwceam and thwceam until she’s sick really doesn’t work with the Tory grandees.
So, if I understand this, this MP is throwing a temper tantrum because she hasn’t been given a meaningless title? What is she, twelve? American here, so I’m not as versed on British politics, but getting a peerage just means the King gives her a silk ribbon and she gets to call herself “Dame”, right? Is there anything substantive here? Or is it political? Is the snub a message, and that’s what’s put the stick up her butt?
“Baroness” or “Lady”, not Dame. It gets you a permanent seat in the House of Lords, which grants you £332 per day attendance allowance, plus travel and lunch, plus the opportunity to still serve as a Cabinet Minister in the government, should you be chosen. Plus debate legislation. And probably gets you a load of non-exec, highly paid board seats.
Okay, so there is some actual, tangible benefit to having the King whack you with a sword. That’s a little more understandable. She still sounds a bit petty and narcissistic, though. (Also, I thought ex-MPs just got OBEs or MBEs?)
There’s no sword, just a piece of paper. I don’t think there’s even any personal element to it, it’s just paperwork that comes across the King’s desk. Women never get whacked with swords in any case; knights receive the accolade, but dames are a 20th century invention and they just get a couple of shiny things pinned to them.
Nadine Dorries was a cabinet minister, and it’s pretty common for them to be sent to the Lords if they want it. Sometimes it’s also a prize for long service or being especially loyal to the PM (which Nadine Dorries also was).
OBEs, MBEs, Knighthoods, the odd peerage (ie elevation to the House of Lords and a VERY fancy title). Personally, I’m rather envious of the French. We just never had the revolution that would have allowed us to sweep all this nonsense away.
I don’t think you grasp how class-obsessed the British still are. Human beings crave respect as much as they crave money and sex, if not more, and in Britain, having a “Lord” or “Lady” in front of your name gives you automatic respect in many circles. It’s as simple as that.
Meanwhile, the government lost its attempt to be allowed to decide which of Johnson’s phone messages were “relevant” to the Covid public enquiry: and Johnson first apparently “forgot” the password to the phone in question - but it now appears the government has found it
Is this a reference to cocaine? I know it would have meant Coca-Cola if we’d been talking about Trump, but Johnson doesn’t seem like a soft drinks guy to me.
