Seems if he were to go to all that trouble he wouldn’t have hid the evidence under the floors, though.
I don’t mean “since the war”, it just looked like it had been more than a couple days. Didn’t they say that Zigic had personally selected Lukic from a list of interpreters?
Well, curly chick was right about Lukic being The Devil. Except, he wasn’t really Lukic. Jane travelled to Bosnia and found another optician who had trained with both the real Lukic and The Devil (whose real name was Yankovic or something like that). He said that Yankovic had joined a paramilitary not for political reasons but just to kill Muslims.
On returning to London, Jane was taken into a room with a couple of government spooks and told that Yankovic was being protected by them in return for giving them information about more serious war criminals. She was also told that the massacre the sisters claimed to have been a part of never happened, and that Zigic had killed both of them on his own. She was made to sign an Official Secrets form and ordered not to use anything they’d told her in her investigation.
She finally managed to get him through his wife - by surreptitiously tape recording her saying that her husband was grassing on his countryment in return for British government protection. Jane then took this tape to Zigic to show him “what kind of man you’re protecting”. Zigic then told her that he had killed the real Lukic on Yankovic’s orders (Yankovic had told him Lukic was an informer) and brought her to where the body was buried. They matched the dental records from the real Lukic and Jane then arrested Yankovic for murdering Lukic - in the presence of one of the shocked government spooks.
That’s actually one of the things I was disappointed in, the implication that the spooks really didn’t know Yankovic was still killing people. I doubt IRL they would have cared if he was.
Yeah, Jane sent the journo guy (what was his name?) to the sisters’ funeral on her behalf. He spilled the beans to Kasim about what they’d discovered in Bosnia and Kasim and his friends then kidnapped Yankovic and were trying to smuggle him across the channel (I’m not really clear on why they did this instead of killing him) but were caught. The government then decided to give Yankovic a new identity in another country which is why the spook was with him when Jane showed up to arrest him - he was just about to be taken away.
Forgot to mention, they provided a perfectly plausible explanation for how the Devil could recognise the younger sister ten years later: because she now looked exactly like her sister (ten years older than her) did at the time.
I guess that’s why they write television series and I don’t.
