Prince Harry to marry Meghan Markle

Reading her Wikipedia page I find that I share an ancestor with the happy couple. Wonder if I’ll get an invite to the wedding, me being one of the family?

Yes. It may even mean the ceremony is held in private (although there’ll be a procession through Windsor. No point having royals if you can’t get a good procession). Charles married Camilla in Windsor, with a blessing the the Chapel.

Just novelty. American actresses are nothing new to marriages with European royalty, and neither are divorcees, but black people are.

Oooh! Can I be your +1?

I don’t know where the “Jewish” idea came from. She’s a nice Catholic girl. Oh, that could be a problem.

At least Catholics don’t believe in divorce. Oops.

It’s nice to see some of those stodgy old traditions challenged and bypassed. I usually think of the Royals as useless frivolousness, but to the extent they do serve as role models for a lot of folks, good on them this time!

I am surprised, and pleased, that Queen Elizabeth gave this the go-ahead. She is a very traditional woman raised during a very different time and she is fiercely protective of the royal family. Miss Markle, as wonderful as she may be, has just about every strike against her imaginable in a royal bride: biracial, Jewish background (her father is Jewish), and divorced. QEII must really love Harry to make so many concessions for him. That is good to see.

I wish them all well.

Is she Catholic? she went to a Catholic school, but that isn’t defininitive.
As of 2013, royals can marry Catholics:

Wow. What a minefield. Meghan Markle is black the same way Grace Kelly was a commoner. I think the “controversy” is exaggerated by Americans and clickbait media.

prince harry said that the corgis liked meghan from the first. perhaps that gave meghan a paw up with the queen.

Her first husband was Jewish. Her father is not.

The BBC reports she is Protestant, and is being baptized into the Church of England. And taking British Citizenship.

Oh, and it sounds like the wedding WILL be televised.

OK, my bad in assuming that going mostly to Catholic schools growing up meant that she was Catholic. And I should know. I went to mostly Catholic schools, and some of the kids were not Catholic.

Why not? Andrew’s was; so was Anne’s (IIRC, Anne’s was the first royal wedding televised live in the USA).

But on to more pressing concerns…what title will they receive? It has become “traditional” to give one of The Queen’s male children/grandchildren a title when they get married; I wouldn’t be surprised if “the Princess Diana problem” has something to do with it (officially, the wife of a prince isn’t supposed to be called “Princess” followed by her own first name).
I don’t think Harry will become a duke, as I think they want to be able to make him Duke of York after Andrew, the way that Edward is “only” an earl as he is being groomed to be the next Duke of Edinburgh. My first thought was Earl of Nottingham, named for Nottingham Cottage, but there already is one of those; next was Earl of Kensington, but there is already a Baron Kensington.

Maybe something from her family. I see Markle’s from California and her mother lives in … Windsor Hills.

Damn, that one’s already taken too.

Current bets are “Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Sussex”

You can google this. She will not be a Prince/ess, but their children will be, like William & Kate’s.

Even the Daily Mail bigot comments seem to be complaining because she’s a) too old, b) divorced, and c) American. I read as many as I could stomach, and race didn’t pop up in even there.

Honestly, I can’t see her race really raising eyebrows here; I’m not saying there isn’t racism in the UK, that would be stupid, but it’s doesn’t quite take the same form as in the US, and the ‘one drop rule’ isn’t really a thing.

I mean, take one of my former co-workers for example, his Mum was white British, Dad was black Jamaican; my co-worker identified as mixed race, his girlfriend was white, and he described their kids as ‘white, like their Mum’.

If she was darker skinned, there would be comments and complaints from some quarter, but mixed ancestry, looking like she does? Not an issue.

Huh, some of the articles I clicked through yesterday (USA Today, Vox) said her father was Jewish, but I guess they were inaccurate.

Being smokin’ hot does seem to open a lot of doors.

I can’t help but feel this is racist ! Cute puppies ??? I am White and my daughter dad was Black and Native American and my daughter is NOT a dog !

Her first husband was Jewish. Some people are very confused.

And as mentioned, speculation is that Harry will become the Duke of Sussex.
