Prince Louis: A shot across the bow of Republican France?

Yup. “Welf” is the German spelling, “Guelf” is one Italian variation.

Third child, why can’t they just give him a normal name? Kate has a family too, they could’ve picked a name from there.

What’s abnormal about Louis Arthur Charles? Three names may be a bit long, but none of them are odd. He didn’t name the kid North or Apple or Moon Unit.

I agree. Maybe it’s just a sign of my age but I consider Louis to be a more normal name than Eugenie, Isla, Savannah, or Zara.

I mean like if he’s named after his father William why can’t they call him Billy. I always thought Princess Diana should have called William ‘Billy’. I guess they’ll call the baby little Louis. I don’t know, it just seems they just keep recycling the same group of names and on and on and on. Never ends. I just cannot wait to how Harry names his kids. I am hoping he will break out.

And what gives with them naming kids “William?” None of the Kings William were the least bit British, though it will help when they reclaim Normandy and maybe when they invade Orange County, CA. That’s where William of Orange came from, right?

So by “normal” you mean “stop doing it the way you usually do”. That’s an odd definition of "normal.

Ack, I don’t know what I mean. I just don’t like their naming traditions, I guess. And if Prince Charles becomes king, he will be another name. If he lives long enough.

To some extent they do - but not universally. The royal family has an Savannah and an Isla and a Zara and a Beatrice and a Eugenie. However, its a family in which tradition runs pretty strong and where the name you pick is going to be criticized and examined on the world stage for its appropriateness. You aren’t likely to get Apple or a Blue Ivy or a Moon Unit. The further from that damn chair you get the more flexibility you have in naming -Princess Eugenie is getting married - there is enough distance there for her to have not a overwhelming amount of scrutiny on a name.

Can you imagine having to name your kid and it will be something that millions of people will have an opinion on? It was hard enough naming my kids and just keeping both sets of grandparents content - fortunately, my son has two grandfathers named Michael, so that was one easy middle name.

The British royal family is an odd definition of “normal.”

Poppycock!

William III was the grandson of Charles I, nephew to Charles II and James II. He was the great-grandson of James I/VI, and the descendant of all the Stewart Kings and Queen, and of Robert the Bruce. He was also the great-great-great grandson of Henry VII, and through him descended from most of the English kings.

William IV was born in England. His father George III was born in England. William IV lived all his life in Britain, except when he was abroad serving in the Royal Navy, including a stint fighting the rebellious colonists in North America. Like William III, George III and William IV were the descendants of James I/VI, and thus descended from the Kings of England and of Scots.

Not needing to know that shit is a blessing from throwing off the English yoke a long time ago, something I’ve noticed y’all never did completely, Piper.
ETA: Added emoticon so nobody would take me too seriously for my anti-Canadian speech. The first time I was pitted was for that. I forgave her because Canadians don’t have a sense of humor.

My nephew’s oldest son is named Louis. But his mother’s British. Well, Welsh.

He’s named “Louis” with a Welsh mother?

Why so many vowels?

Well Prince William is ‘of Wales’ so there’s clearly some Welsh collusion going on.

I know it’s tongue-in-cheek, but you hear it a lot the “they’re really German.”
The last English monarch not born in London was George II in 1683. They are as German as FDR was Dutch.

I think George III actually spent every single day of his life in England.
