Oh sorry, missed that bit. Well, let’s see, Hitler officially outlawed the SDP in 1933, so not much of a conduit available for anti-Nazi merch after that?
Well maybe DEM tourists don’t want to walk around with wearing a target “I LUV JOE!”
She was in business selling screen printed tourist t-shirts: If your customer wants apples, sell 'em apples.
If you can’t get apples buy oranges and paint 'em green"
“Anti-Trump” automatically means “Pro-Joe” to you??
This isn’t a freakin’ ball game, and it is actually possible to oppose what Trump is doing and saying.
Wasn’t there a global economic depression happening during most of the 1930s? The notion that there was a “merch” industry of any type during that era strikes me as counterintuitive.
I think multiple factors are involved - including demographics of beachgoers somewhat favoring Trump, along with his opponents not wanting to engage in confrontation on their vacations involving unhinged MAGA-ites.*
If I was going to make a political statement with part of my large collection of t-shirts**, I’d choose ones that aren’t specifically anti-Trump but are pro-democracy/pro-Constitution.
*an informal rule I follow closely is that if I buy a destination-themed t-shirt on vacation, I don’t wear it until I get home, partly so as to look less obviously touristy. If there were anti-Trump t-shirts for sale I wouldn’t wear one at the beach or at home (imagining potential unpleasant encounters while shopping at the Rural King, which favors the occasional MAGA garb-wearer).
**I have a few anti-quackery t-shirts designed with the help of AI. One features Satan peddling snake oil supplements from a carny-style booth.
I think that the kind of person who buys garish t shirts at the beach is likely to be a fascist, so there is likely a larger market for garish fascist crap at the beach. That and someone selling or wearing anti-Trump merch could likely get beaten to death by said fascists.
So, what’s the typical political orientation of someone who’d wear this t-shirt (lots of raunchy ones have evidently become popular among the beach crowd in recent years).
In New York’s Jewish Museum, you can find the “Haman-Hitler grager,” a traditional noisemaker used to drown out the name of the villain Haman during the festival of Purim. It’s carved with miniature heads of Haman and Hitler, flanking a small mallet that pivots back and forth between bashing each one on the crown. (No idea of the date or provenance.)
I have a big enough target on my head from these assholes just by being queer and trans, so I’m not going to make it worse by intentionally pissing off violent fascists.
I saw an anti-Biden flag in the window (actually, taking up the entire front window) of a souvenir shop at a waterfront resort. This was early in his term, so it wasn’t necessarily pro-Trump, just anti-Joe.
It got me thinking about the huge divide between the people who vacation on their boats and those who “service” them. The rich customers vs “the help”, and the resentment that’s got to be simmering just under the surface…
A side note that I thought of – regarding the argument that people aren’t selling anti-Trump T-shirts (or buying them) at resort venues because they’re afraid of retaliation by his less controlled supporters – consider anti-Trump bumper stickers.
I’ve seen plenty of them on cars. (I admit that I haven’t seen pro- or anti-Trump bumper stickers at resorts, although they might be there – I haven’t been looking for them.) And people ca retaliate against cars even easier than against people, even down to simply keying the finish. But it hasn’t stopped people from expressing an opinion via the sticker.
I was in Key West last year during the summer and saw a ton of “Let’s go Brandon” stuff for sale. T-shirts, hats, even tattoo parlors had let’s go Brandon stuff. No MAGA stuff, probably because its trademarked. It gave me a chuckle thinking about it when Joe dropped from the race.
In 2016, I got a window sticker that said “STD: Stop The Donald.” (There were also stickers that said “HIV: Hillary Isn’t Viable.”) Never got a negative comment about it.
