Just wanted a breakdown on active Dopers positions; although you could probably start a thread with the single word “gun” and it would turn into a thousand-post flamewar.
I support private ownership of guns and plan to start target shooting this summer, but I also support increased background check legislation and restrictions on magazine size and assault weapons. So how should I vote?
I went with bacon, I mean, why wouldn’t I.
I not anti gun, I’m pro gun control. I would have for example voted for expanded back ground checks.
I’m a fairly strong gun-rights supporter, though I also support reasonable regulation and licensing requirements. I don’t really know if any of those categories fit me. Therefore, bacon.
I went with other, even though I was strongly tempted by bacon.
Not responding to this poll, because characterizing gun-control advocates as “anti-gun” is poisoning the well. There certainly are people outright anti-gun (my wife for one), but I’m a very firm gun-control advocate who still thinks shooting firearms can be a blast in the right circumstances.
The OP didn’t actually do that, though I understand your sentiment.
I started typing this post by stating that I wasn’t going to vote in the poll, because the OP made no attempt to define his terms at all. We own guns, and I strongly support our Constitutional right to do so. By that definition, I would consider myself “strongly pro-gun”, but without knowing how the terms are defined, I was concerned that I might be painting an incorrect picture of myself.
Then I decided that I didn’t care. I am “strongly pro-gun”, according to my own definition. Which I think might be what the OP was looking for to begin with.
I wanted to be able to also pick bacon
The NRA would call each and every one of y’all rabid anti-gun liberals.
Huh. Well, I guess I’ll pick “bacon” then.
Nah, then you’d get the gun all greasy, and that affects your gun control.
I voted other: neither pro- or anti-gun, although I’d like there to be fewer instances of gun violence and a lower body count at the end of the year, and I’m not sure whether that’s best brought about by limiting crazy peoples’ access to guns or getting more guns out onto the streets into the hands of responsible shooters. Time will tell.
I don’t like the NRA.
If “anti-NRA” was an option for voting, I’d click fast enough to break my trackpad.
I agree with most of the above, however

I prefer sausage myself.
I tend to be in favor of laws that require things like increased background checks, registries, etc, and against laws that effect the legality of the guns themselves, if that makes sense. Put myself down as “mildly pro-gun.”
I want to see 100% registration, and criminal penalties for non compliance. But I’m cool with people owning guns. How should I vote?
Strongly anti-gun. I have absolutely no problem with outlawing them completely and then prying them from your cold, dead hands if need be.
I’n no more pro-gun than I am pro-abortion*, though rights in both cases within reasonable parameters** are worth defending.
*so I voted for bacon.
**and yes, agreeing on what those should be is the fun part.
I am strongly anti-gun
Strongly pro-liberty; guns are no exception.
