I think Bobby Backland and Tommy Rich were always “faces”.
Nope as to both. Backlund heeled it up on a return to WWF, and surprised a lot of folks, including me, with what a good heel he could be.
Rich heeled in Memphis, including hiding under the ring during a hair match between Lawler and Austin Idol. Rich interfered to cost Lawler his hair, and almost caused a riot. Rich’s picture was on the cover of an Apter mag over the caption “The fans can go to Hell!”. I think he also heeled in ECW, and possibly as a part of the York Foundation in WCW.
Not in World Class, but as mentioned upthread, wrestlers bounced from territory to territory quite a bit. I believe David worked heel in Florida, and Kevin and Kerry worked other territories as well where they probably worked heel.
Yep. Think Kerry heeled in Florida shortly after he won the NWA Title, and some combination of Von Erichs including Kevin heeled in Amarillo against the Funks.
One of his gimmicks during his later heel run was refusing to sign autographs unless the requestee could rattle off the names of all the presidents in order. When I got my photo taken with him at a photo-op at a WWE house show earlier this year, I made sure to do so unbidden.
I never saw Backlund wrestle, but was highly entertained by him when he was trying to be the guest referee at Heck in a Cell. This sounds hilarious.
Was Hacksaw Jim Duggan ever a heel?
Oh yes, in his early days in mid south.
He was a comedy heel, a member of the FBI (Full Blooded Italians) in their second incarnation. He had another southerner as a partner, whose name currently escapes me.
Rich versus Sawyer is still, to me, the best feud ever.
He also did the double-turn with Steve Austin, when Ken Shamrock, as guest referee, called a match due to Austin’s excessive bleeding while he was being held in the sharpshooter. Hart exited a heel, Austin a face.
I think the partner was Tracy Smothers.
100% correct. I remembered his name started with a T, but just couldn’t place it.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan also turned heel in WCW, when he defected to Team Canada.
Ricky Steamboat acted heelish to help Ron Killings win the NWA title via playing the race card in an early TNA angle. Nothing really came of it as Steamboat (who was in some sort of on screen figure head role, not a wrestler so may not count for this thread) basically left right after that.
Sting’s been a heel in both late WCW (where the turn flopped spectacularly and was quickly undone) and in TNA (where it worked a lot better, but still didn’t last a super long time).
George the Animal Steele had a lengthy face run in the WWF at the end of his career. It was years before I even knew he’d even been a heel. Most memorable was his feud with then heel Randy Savage (George had a crush on Liz). Eventually he began carrying a stuffed… creature… called MINE to the ring with him and he’d yell MINE! a lot (in addition to eating the turnbuckles). Of course they were selling replicas in the concession stands and through the catalogs in WWF magazine.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t if true (and I’m not saying it’s not, I legitimately don’t know) since he was a wrestler before becoming a manager and then a broadcast journalist.
He did get pretty faceish with regard to the nWo, at least in the beginning.
When was Tommy Rich in the FBI? I watched ECW from 97 until its death and I’m shocked that I’m just now hearing this.
Dammit. This thread and the book I’m reading are making me want to take up watching wrasslin’ again.
I slowly started easing back into it about 2 years ago, after taking off for about 10 years. There’s a lot of Shawn Michaels matches you need to get caught up on!

Ultimate Warrior ever a heel?
BTW a hijack, but I hear that Hogan could do an inzaguri?
Personally, I still can’t forgive him for turning his back on Marty Janetty.
