Growing up with U.S. media commercials with claims of “the Best…” whatever, I had questions to ask when visiting Britian back in the 80’s. Products on billboards advertised “probably the best…” whatever. Claiming to be the “best” in other countries carries more weight, or has a slightly different meaning. “Probably the best…” being a legal way to make the same claim.
To me, the claim of being the “best” is an abstraction. A brag that has no real qualifying criteria. In this context, it is just media puffery.
Claiming to be “better,” than a similar product is a statement that requires some supporting evidence. Granted, companies have distorted facts to justify their position, and have gotten in trouble for it.
