Problem connecting a computer to a TV with HDMI cord

I’ve been having trouble with connecting my laptop to my TV. The funny thing is, I got it to work on Thursday and Friday, but when I try to get it to work now, it’s just not working.

I have a HP G72-B60US Laptop, that I can connect to my Toshiba TV with an HDMI cable. On the TV the HDMI cable is connected to the HDMI 2 port. I had to mess around a bit on Thursday to get it to work, since I didn’t quite know what I was doing. But I think what I did was as follows:

  1. Set computer resolution to 1360x768, since that’s the highest resolution the TV can stand.
  2. Connected the HDMI cord to the TV and computer.
  3. Put TV input to the HDMI 2 input.

Then I would see the same thing on my computer screen and the TV screen. I watched about half of the fourth season of Battlestar Galatica this way. I had planned to watch some more BG today, but now when I change the TV input to HDMI 2, the screen goes black on both my laptop and my TV. I’m pretty sure that the TV is getting the signal from my laptop, because otherwise there would be a “no input” box bouncing around the TV screen.

I’ve tried various other resolutions, and various settings on “connect to projector” or “connect to external display” but nothing has worked.

I’m totally mystified since I got it to work Thursday after a little while, and got it to work Friday with no problem at all. If anyone can help I’d appreciate it.
