I have a 1990 1240 Massey Ferguson. I was using it this morning, and it just shut off. My fuel filter is new and the air filter is clean. I took the fuel line loose going to the injector pump. I turned my key on, and I’m getting plenty of fuel. I checked all fuses; all good. I attempted to start, and it spins normally, but will not fire. Can anyone give me any idea of what the problem is?
The fact that it just shut off dead is a concern, usually if it is running and cuts out, the engine is hot enough not to need the glow plugs working.
There is a fuel solenoid on it somewhere, maybe a wire fell off it, and also the gearbox safety switch - this is the one that prevents you starting it when you are in gear, unless you have the clutch depressed. The sudden stop does seem like a fuel solenoid issue to me - see if you can get an electrical drawing online and find out what switches are in line with the fuel shut off solenoid
This has to be a first.
If it’s not the fuel shut off solenoid, I think you’ve got injection pump troubles.
Eliminate the simple stuff first. I had a 1440 that would act similarly. It turned out to be water in the fuel. There was a water trap/sediment bowl just off the tank. When it got too much water built up it would start passing on through the line and the engine would die. Happened 5 or 6 times before I got all the water out. There’s also the possibility that it’s sucking air somewhere between tank and injectors.
