Problem with tuner/amplifier

I don’t really expect any Doper will actually be able to help, but it costs nothing to try.

I have a Sony tuner/amplifier and listen to the radio between 9 and 3 every day. It is probably about 10 years old and can connect to my computer with Bluetooth. Last Monday, 8 days ago, it suddenly stopped playing the radio. Nothing and when I tried other stations, still nothing. I could still listen to the radio by picking it up on my computer and casting it to the tuner by Bluetooth. The only downside to this was that my wife was playing the radio in her office and my feed was delayed by a half minute or so over hers and there is enough communication between the two rooms to hear the clash.

Tuesday, the tumer started working again and continued to work through Sunday. Yesterday it stopped again. And started working again this morning.

Any thoughts? Monday blues?

I’d start with a Google search using the model number of the receiver to see if this might be an issue with that particular model. It sounds like a loose connection somewhere in the unit.

I have an old Kenwood receiver that has issues with the remote, and a check on Google showed that it was likely due to some cold solder joints on a circuit board, and someone even posted photos of the bad joints. I took mine apart and had the same issue, which was an easy fix.

Is there a mechanical switch that changes sources? If so, I would liberally soak it with contact cleaner and run it back and forth. While you are at it, do all the other switches, too.

Unplug it and take the cover off. Use a compressed air can to remove any dust and tin whiskers that might be present.

Look at the solder joints, especially around connectors. Reflow any that have cracks.

Reseat connectors and sockets (if you feel comfortable doing so - some are fragile).

The contact cleaner is a good recommendation.

Are you sure the signal you want to amplify is still being broadcast?

Yes, my wife was listening to it in her office. It is CBC; being off the air would be a major news report here.

Yes, it is likely something like that. I am listening to it right now and it is doing fine. Curious that it has happened two Mondays in a row. I tried it Monday night–nothing; and then it was fine Tuesday morning. It is clearly in the tuner since the amplifier was working fine.
